A New Hero, chapter 3

Carson was stuck with the strange children and the kidnappers for almost 3 months. His birthday came and went, and all he got was a rock from Joe, a piece of bread from Kara, and a quarter from a girl named Sara. He had done a lot of work for the evil men and had grown a lot stronger. One day, during the middle of the night, a storm came into the town.

"Kara! Sara! Go make sure the door is locked and all the windows are covered." Joe shouted. The two girls ran off into the house. Many of the other children were sitting around. One young boy was holding his knees and crying.

"I don't like the rain." He sobbed. Carson went over to him and put his shoulder around the boy.

"It will be okay, the rain can't hurt you," he said to the boy. The boy smiled and sniffled. He then stood up and ran over to a girl who ushered him into one of the bedrooms.

"Hey Carson, come here," Joe called from down the hall. Carson started walking over to Joe. " Faster," he hissed. Carson ran over to him.

"What's wrong Joe? Is it a bad storm," Carson asked. Joe was staring out the window. Suddenly a loud crack came from the distance. Then a scream, and three more cracks.

"What was that?" Kara asked climbing out from a room. Caron and Joe shook their heads. The three of them then walked back towards the main room, when the door shook. They stopped.

"What was that," Carson said slowly. The door shook again. Kara's eyes were wide open and Joe looked worried. "I think someone is at the door," Carson whispered.

With a blast, the door flew into the house and Carson, Joe, and Kara screamed, along with all the other kids. A tall man with short blonde hair was standing there in the rain. He was holding a gun.

"Please don't hurt us!" Kara screamed. She fell to her knees and started to cry. Then man glanced at her then at Joe and Carson.

"Gather your friends." The man said in a hoarse voice. Joe shrugged his shoulders and ran out of the room and Carson heard him telling the others about the man.

"Who are you?" Carson asked. The man looked at him then smiled.

"I am here to save you all. You will not have to worry about any more work. There are families who will be expecting you" he said. Carson's jaw dropped. His heart was brimming with joy. He would get to see his mother again.

"So we all get to go back to our families!" Carson cried. The man shook his head. " What, what do you mean?"

"You cannot go back to your original families. You will be sent to new families," he said. Carson snapped back to reality. He had been thinking about playing in his backyard and having dinner with his mom on the porch. Tears welled up in his eyes, for the millionth time since he thought of his mother. " I'm sorry, boy, I hate bringing the bad news. Go get your stuff. Were leaving." The man said.

Carson dragged himself over to his few belongings. His jacked that he used as a pillow was dirty and gross. In the pocket was the quarter he had gotten for his birthday. Joe put his hand on Carson's shoulder.

"It will be okay Carson. We get to see our families again," he said smiling. Carson didn't know what to say. So he smiled a fake smile. Joe grinned back at him then ran off to find one of his good friends.

The man helped all of the kids climb into a giant truck. It had couches and pillows and new clothes all over it.

"Get changed, okay, and I will be dropping you off with your new families soon," he said. All the kids looked at each other.

"What do you mean... new families?" a girl called out. The man looked at the girl, then at Carson, then at everyone.

"You are all going to new families, because the men that held you captive told your families lies about you being killed. You cannot return after that," he said grimacing. Sara choked back a sob, while Kara clung to her shoulders. Joe's mouth was just kind of hanging open. " Have a nice drive kids," he said. He closed the door to the truck and went up to the front and started to drive.
