"Fuck did you see that?" said Mike to Tre.
"No," said Tre, looking around frantically, "Where's Zooey? Where's Jovie?" Tre was starting to panic now. Where was Zooey? He could feel her pain. It wasn't good in the least bit. He glanced at Billie Joe.
Billie Joe was still singing! Tre could not believe his eyes! Jovie and Zooey were both missing all of a sudden and he was just singing? It was not like him at all.
*In the crowd*
All Jovie could do was hear the sound of Billie Joe's new song and search for Zooey. It was very hard for her. She was covered in mud, soaked in something smelly, and she could not see Zooey, but only hear the tearing of her clothes and her screams under a crowd of men.
"Please, God," prayed Jovie, tearing rolling frantically down her face, "please save her and me. Please don't let us die!"
Jovie stumbled over to the group and pulled Zooey out from under them. She was naked, and covered in mud, and her face was stained in tears.
"Zoegirl," replied Jovie, quietly trying to mask her fear, "Are you okay?"
Zooey was gone. Dead to the world. She could not see, hear or think anymore at that moment. Her fear had engulfed her sanity and pain was all she felt.
"It'll all be okay, I promise things will look up for us one day, and we will be with them forever and they will take care of us and make sure nothing like this happens to us again, I promise."
Zooey was still gone. The group moved in.
*On stage*
Billie Joe had told himself what Jovie would have told him. That was to keep playing and not get himself hurt. But of course it was impossible when the girl he loved all his life was gone from within seeing range and not knowing where she was and knowing something bad was going to happen was another story altogether.
He glanced into the audience to catch even a glimpse of her while he sang, but it was no use to him whatsoever. He looked over at Mike and Tre to see if they had seen her. He knew they hadn't of course. Then-
"Help me!" it was Zooey, being lifted on top of the crowd by the group!
"Zooey!" screamed Tre, trying but failing to go after his beloved Zooey. Mike held him back.
"Don't! There is nothing we can do!"
"Yes there is!" screamed Tre, bursting into tears.
"No!" shouted Billie Joe, anxiously trying to keep back his own tears.
"Why not! You of all people should be out there! You claim to be so in love with Jovie, then when it comes down to it, you are completely hopeless and useless! No wonder she didn't want to be with you!"
Billie Joe snapped. He walked over to Tre and yanked him up by his throat.
"Listen to me," said Billie Joe calmly. "Jovie signaled me and told me to play no matter what happened to her, I want to listen to her, she'll get pissed off if I don't. Understand?" And he put him down.
Tre nodded and understood. They continued to play, trying hard to ignore the screams in the crowd that belonged to the girls that they had loved all their lives...
