When they arrived at the hospital, the doctory were hesitant to let Billie Joe and Tre in to see Zooey and Jovie (who shared a room, at the request of a frantic and hysterical Zooey, pre-coma). They were not, however, hesitant to let Emily in to see them. Which proved later on to be a mistake, as she ran from the room screaming, freaking out, and crying, she had to be escorted out of the hospital, which appeared to be fine with her.
Emily made Billie and Tre worry more; Mike already said he couldn't see them in that condition, it would kill him. As they fought over the subject, the doctor said that they could go in and visit them, even though they were sleeping. They all decided to see them together; they even convinced Mike to see them.
As they appeared in the doorway, unable to comprehend what was going to be seen, they each said a silent prayer that the girls were okay. When they came in, they were dead wrong.
Jovie's wrists were cut to the bone, her eyes were blackened, she was ultra thin and pale, and there were cuts and bruises all over her. Zooey was the same. They were horribly thin, and the guys could not believe they did not put a stop to it. Mike had seen enough.
"I have to go," said Mike covering his mouth, and allowing the tears to flow down his cheeks, not caring if he looked like a pussy to them. He didn't care anymore. He turned and walked out. Tre and Billie Joe had tears going down their faces too. Billie Joe took the empty seat next to Jovie's bed and held her bony, lifeless hand and kissed it and held it tightly.
"What the hell happened?" asked Tre out loud to himself. "Were they beaten?"
Billie looked at his Jovie and did not look away, even to answer Tre's question. "I don't know....I love her so much, and now it looks as though I may lose her for good this time."
Just as Billie and Tre began to give up hope, Doctor Watkins came in.
"Hello," she replied with a smile. "Who might we have here today?"
"What the hell happened?" demanded Tre, standing up.
Dr. Watkins, put down her clipboard, closed the door, and strode to face the window, avoiding any eye contact; it was gonna be hard enough to tell them as it was. She didn't have to look at them. Right?
"Well, Billie Joe and Tre, right?"
"Right," said Tre, confused, "how do you know our names?"
"Zooey screamed a lot of things that did not make sense at the moment, but we did hear your names clearly."
Billie Joe looked at the doctor. "What is wrong with them?"
"Well, Billie Joe, it is rather hard to come right out and say it, but it is the only way to tell you what happened."
"Tell us, it is the only way we will ever find out."
"Okay, when Mr. Cuomo brought them in, we all knew Jovie was the worst off. She was the only one not moving, not breathing. She was the one we had to revive. Her little, tiny body could not handle the strain or the force of what was happening to her. She did jump into a crowd to save Zooey, correct?"
Billie Joe and Tre nodded.
Dr. Watkins continued, "Well, when she jumped into the crowd to save Zooey, she actually did. More then half of the men jumped on her. Zooey did get hurt a significant lot, but Jovie got it the worst. I have never seen this kind of dedication to a best friend in all my years of working here. It is truly remarkable; that is why I chose to be their nurse and doctor."
Tre looked at her. "Well, do you know exactly what happened to her when she and Zooey were alone in the crowd?"
Dr. Watkins nodded. "They were raped by a gang of men. Jovie particularly got it the worst. We don't know when they may come out of their comas."
Billie Joe looked at his Jovie and began to cry.
