Things Aren't What They Seem (Not A Green Day Story), chapter 3
Finn, Leila and Joshy sat at the kitchen table to eat breakfast, and Finn just sat staring at his hands in his lap. Leila and Joshy knew what was going on, but didn't want to upset Finn by talking about it. Then Leila had a great idea. She wasn't sure Finn would want to go through with it. But she figured she needed to try. He was such a good guy and he deserved to feel happiness, even if only for a little while. So she stood up, grabbed his hand and said, "C'mon guys I have an idea." and she took them out back behind the house. There was a short fence that separated his yard from his neighbor's yards. You could see over it and through it so Leila made sure no one was around before she went digging through her bag.
Finn was so confused he just stood there and stared at her, wondering what she was up to. She was looking around like she was suspicious of something. She finally pulled out what looked like a small cigarette. His eyes widened at the sight of this. He couldn't believe it. She was going to do 'that' right here? Right now? Now he was looking around suspiciously. Leila pulled out a lighter and lit her joint. Taking a long relaxing drag, closing her eyes and feeling the smoke fill her mouth, lungs, her whole body and felt so good. She passed it to Joshy who did the same, and got this far away look in his eyes and grinned. When he passed it to Finn, he just stared at it debating whether he wanted to do it or say no and look like a loser.
"You don't have to do it Finn, but it'll make you feel better about....stuff..." Leila said reassuringly, getting a far away look as well. He took the joint into is thumb and pointer finger as he saw Leila and Joshy do. He put it to his lips and inhaled.
"Now, hold it in!" Leila said. Finn did as he was told and if felt like his insides where burning up, but he didn't let it out. He closed his eyes because they where starting to water. Finally when he got lightheaded from lack of oxygen he let it out, with a cough. When he opened his eyes to see Leila and Joshy staring at him in amazement.
"I've never seen anyone hold it that long!! Way to go man!" Joshy said smacking him on the back. Finn grinned feeling giddy and hyper. He wanted to do anything and everything. He passed the joint back to Leila. It went around two more times and they where all smiling and laughing.
"Let's doooooo something!" Leila said, a little too loudly. Finn felt like he was going to burst if he didn't do something. So he jumped up, wobbled a little and took off down the street, yelling, "Let's go to the mall!" Leila took off after him, Joshy following singing Basket case by Green Day. When he caught up with Finn and Leila (they where walking by now) he stood in front of them, making them stop and yelled
"Sometimes I give myself the creeps, sometimes my mind plays tricks on me, it all keeps adding up! I think I'm cracking up! Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?" Finn raised his eyebrows as Leila started yelling and singing along with him.
"I went to a shrink, to analyze my dreams, she says it's lack of sex thats bringing meee down. I went to a whore, he said my life's a bore, so quite my whining 'cause it's bringin' HER down." Finn's eyes widened at hearing these vulgar lyrics. Then he laughed so hard he couldn't breathe. Leila crossed her arms and looked serious.
"Is something funny Mr. Finn? Do you not like Green Day? 'Cause if you don't, then I'll have just to kick that sexy ass of yours." Finn raised an eyebrow. Girls don't swear! But wait- did she just say his 'butt' was sexy? Finn gave her an evil grin. And he surprised himself by stepping forward and put his hands on her lower back.
He looked down at her and said, "You, Ms. Leila, shouldn't swear," in an low almost whisper. Then he took her hand and ran down the street after Joshy who went into peoples yards and started putting little notes on peoples doors saying things like, "Anarchy in the U.S." and "You're a shitty old man."
"What the...where did he get the paper?!" Leila said, forgetting about how close Finn had been a few seconds earlier.
"Joshy! We got the cops called on us the last time we did that! Stop it!" She went up to all the doors Joshy had been to and took the pieces of paper off of them.
"Hey! Those are mine!" Joshy whined as he ran up and took them away from her. There where about 7 little pieces of paper Joshy had made. He stuffed them into his pocket. When they finally reached the mall they where so hyper they would not stop laughing. This caused many people to stare at them. They spotted a record store and went in and started thumbing through all of the records.
"I know, things are gettin tougher when you can't get the top off the bottom on the barrel..." Leila sang, too loud. She turned to see Finn staring at her with a quizzical look on his face.
"Operation Ivy...aww crap I forgot you've never heard of them. They're an old 80s/90s punk band," Leila said. When Finn just looked even more confused she elaborated.
"Huh...okay you know what punk is?" when Finn shook his head she said, "Punk: A variety of rock music characterized by violence and obscenity. Or just extreme emotions. Whether it be anger or irritation or sadness or happiness," she said it like she was quoting it right out of a dictionary. (Okay, I did quote it out of a dictionary. It's the new American Webster handy college dictionary third edition. Plagiarism is bad :-}) Finn was intrigued. He wished he could hear this type of music. She seemed to have a passion for this music. She sure knew a lot about it.
"I'd like to hear some," Finn said, voicing his thoughts. Leila got so excited. She pulled out this funny looking thing. It was a little square thing, it couldn't have been more than a 5 inches long and maybe 2 inches thick. And there was a wire coming out of it that was connected to really small head phones. She put the head phones over Finn's ears and looked back down at her little square. She pushed a few buttons and music filled Finn's ears, not just his ears, his whole body.
There where these deep, dark guitar riff's like he'd never heard before. And the drums, they where loud and obnoxious. He closed his eyes so all he could concentrate on was the music. And then someone started singing, he could feel what the singer was feeling. And the lyrics where magical. When the song was over, he was disappointed. He never wanted it to end. It was the most vulgar, thrashing thing he'd ever heard. But it was also the most beautiful and true thing he'd ever heard. This was definently something he'd want to listen to again.
"So...what did you think?" Leila said when Finn opened his eyes. He looked shocked. He felt wordless.
It was...it....it was amazing. I've never heard anything like it. It felt like what he felt. It makes me want to scream..it's just...wow..." He was shaking his head in disbelief. He never thought anything could ever make him feel this way. Leila was nodding. She knew what it felt like. She felt it every time she listened to punk or any kind of rock. Amazing. He looked at her like she was the greatest thing he'd ever seen.
"Thank you for sharing that with me," Finn said sincerely.
"Any time. Maybe later I'll see if Joshy can hook up my MP3 to your record player. He's a genius at technology. You wouldn't know it to look at him though," she said laughing a little. He was still staring at her, he didn't really register what she had said. She was amazing. She knew so much of the future, she introduced him to the most amazing music he'd ever heard and she helped make him feel better after the episode with his mom that morning. Meeting her and Joshy was the best thing that ever happened to him.
