Flashback, chapter 1

"Mom, I still don't think this is a good idea," Katherine Rawls said to her mother, turning away to face the door.
"Katherine, look at them, though. They're having fun. I-"
"It's not up to you. She's my daughter. I don't know how many times I'll have to tell everyone that. All I'm asking is that you let us stay here."
Her mother sighed. "I don't think it is right to confuse her like this."
"She's two. What is a two-year-old gunna remember in, like, 11 years? And don't worry. He won't come back. I'm making sure of it."

One dull, rainy Monday morning, I sat in math. I looked up slowly at the clock, checking the time. 9:37. I would have to be going to my counselor's office in thirteen minutes. I raised my hand, asking if I could get a drink from the water fountain.
"Oh, come on, Perri. You just cam back from gym. You didn't get one than?" my teacher, Ms. Evans, asked snottily.

"No, I didn't during gym, because that time is for gym and not for drinking water. So may I please go?"
She sighed loudly and said, "Five minutes, that's all I'm giving you." I walked out, passed the lockers, passed the bathrooms, took a mouthful of water. I wiped my mouth with the sleeve of my sweatshirt, and, again, passed the bathrooms and lockers. I stepped back inside the classroom. My head started spinning.
"Perri, sit down." Ms. Evans' voice was distant
"I- I can't." I dropped to my knees.
"Perri?" she asked. I heard the nervousness in her voice. I started vomiting on the linoleum. I fell down into the red and clear liquid. Freezing, I hugged myself, trying to keep the warmth inside. Tears and snot and spit splashed into the pool of my bile.
"Is she okay?" "Is she going to die?" "Should we get the nurse?" "Maybe we should call an ambulance?" I blocked out the voices and passed out.
