Flashback, chapter 3

Of course, it did not go down that easily. There was the whole dragging her ex-lover to court thing. Than there was the judge going in favor of my mom/sister because Billie Joe hadn't been a responsible father. Blah. Blah. BLAH. That's what was going through my head the whole hearing thing. And, also, some Ludacris song about licking people. Ich.
"Ms. Rawls, the court has..." BLAH BLAH BLAH.
"She's only 14..." BLAH BLAH BLAH.
"Ms. Rawls, if you don't..." BLAH BLAH BLAH. Suddenly a cold hand jolted me back into reality. I blink a couple of times and shook my head. Katherine was staring at me, her eyes drilling into mine. She yanked me up and pushed me to face the judge.
"Stand up straight," she hissed in my ear, her fake nails digging into my arm.
"Perri," the judge said. Her head was covered in what looked like brown cotton candy; her skin was a shade of gold and leathery-looking.
"Yes?" I asked, waiting for her to answer.
"Who would you feel more comfortable living with?"
I didn't have to think much about this one. "Well, what do you think? I mean, from what I found out a couple of weeks ago, I've been living a lie. And than, this mysterious guy comes from out of nowhere and says he's my dad. So, 3 DNA tests and a lot of blood and tears later, I find out he's right. And THAN-"
"Wait. What do you mean, blood?" She leaned forward, seeming more interested now.
"Uhm, well, because, you know how you have to do DNA tests with the needle? And they test your, uhm, blood and uh, yeah."
Katherine rolled her eyes and started tapping her foot.
"Ms. Rawls, is there something that you want to say?"
"Yeah. I'm just wondering when she's gonna get on with the answer. So, could we speed it up a little bit?" The judge ignored her and turned to me.
"Listen, sweetheart," she said, "Your future depends on a tiny decision you make now. Do you want to go live your mother, or your father?"
What the fuck...?
I stood there, pretty much in shock. Again, Katherine's plastic nails cutting through my flesh.
"Do you understand?" the judge asked.
"Yeah." I nodded. "Can, I, um, live with my dad?"
She nodded. "The court rules in..." BLAH BLAH BLAH. I was wrapped in what seemed like a hug and pulled out of the courthouse. The last words I remember Katherine saying were, "What? You're gunna regret this, Perri! You're gunna regret it!" I'm not sure if it was a threat, but I never spoke to her again by choice.
