Like A Sickness With No Cure, My Love For You..., chapter 1
"MUM! When is dinner ready?" yelled a young Joey to the kitchen door while Tre paced the living room juggling knitting needles in the air. Jacob sat playing with his shoelaces.
"Dinner will be ready when it's ready," replied a tired Adrienne, juggling pots and pans in a rush to get things done. "Tre, can you put on a video for the boys, please?"
Tre bent down to look in the cabinet. "What do you want boys? Thomas the Tank Engine? The Simpsons? OH MY GOD! You have Snoopy! I love Snoopy!"
Adie walked out and put down a bowl of popcorn. "Just to tide you over until... Tre, what are you doing?"
He was on his hands and knees, his head in the cabinet, making chirping noises. "You never told me you had Snoopy, I WANNA WATCH SNOOPY!" He jumped up and headed straight for the popcorn.
Adie slapped him on the hand. "No Tre! Last time you ate the whole bowlful. Leave some for the boys! Ok, you can watch Snoopy. Is that ok with you kids?"
Joey nodded, but Jacob just sat there, playing with his shoelaces. "Jacob," Adrienne turned to her youngest son, "Is everything ok? You look a bit peaky."
Jacob continued playing with his laces, not even acknowledging that he was being spoken to. "Hey little man!" Tre bent down in front of Jacob. "What's going down lil fella?" This time Jacob replied, he threw up all over Tre.
"Oh no I knew something was wrong!" Adie bent down next to Tre, who was trying to clean himself off. "Why didn't you tell someone you felt sick sweetie?"
"I- I didn't want you to be angry," said Jacob through choked sobs.
"Why would we be angry sweet heart? If you're sick, we want to know so we can help you! Why did you think we'd be angry?" Joey got up and got some tissues for his little brother, who by now was in tears. "D-daddy said that if I-I ever threw up on the new couch, he'd b-be angry with me."
Adie sighed and hugged him. "I'm sure daddy didn't mean it like that, I think he was just joking around baby, we would never be angry with you over something like this."
Tre sat down between Joey and Jacob "Yeah man, I think its cool you threw up on the couch! It gives it some character. It makes it looked loved!"
Adie got up and brushed herself off. "Do you want a drink of water? Or some juice? Tre can put Snoopy on and you can all sit on the rug and watch it. I'll clean up the couch and fix up dinner. Then we can go to the park and you can ride your bikes. Does that sound like a good plan?" Everyone agreed and Adie went back to the kitchen.
It was 6:46. Billie would be home at 7. Adie sighed and looked for the upholstery cleaner. It was right at the back of the sink cupboard, just were it should have been.
Tre walked into the kitchen. "Hey, you want some help? You seen pretty stressed."
Adie turned around and smiled. "Thanks but no thanks Tre, I'm just feeling a bit off colour myself. Why aren't you watching Snoopy?"
Tre looked to the TV. "I am, I just thought if you needed anything."
Adie thought. "Umm, Could you start cleaning off the couch? I want to talk to Billie later about what he said to Jacob. About how much it upset him. I'm pretty sure he would have been kidding around, but..."
Tre walked over to her and put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I bet he was just joking. I've said things like that to Frankito before, and he's done this sort of thing before. Kids that young are impressionable. They'll believe anything!" Tre walked out to the couch and started cleaning. Adie turned to the stove and checked everything was in order. Nothing was burned but the sauce had over run onto the stove top. She sighed to herself and got the dish cloth.
Joey appeared at the door. "Mum, can I talk to you?" Adie turned to a worried Joey and knelt down. "What's wrong baby?"
Joey just bent down and threw up. "Mum I feel sick in my stomach." Adie grabbed a spare bowel as Joey let loose another wave.
"What's going on??" Tre had appeared at the door with a pale Jacob standing behind him.
"I think it might be a stomach bug, they're both sick." Adie felt a twinge in her gut, and the familiar feeling of needing to throw up came out of no where. "Tre, I think I'm sick too."
"Dinner will be ready when it's ready," replied a tired Adrienne, juggling pots and pans in a rush to get things done. "Tre, can you put on a video for the boys, please?"
