From My Broken Home to the Gilman, chapter 1

*Maria's P. O. V. *
I woke up only to be blinded by the sun peeking through my window. I lay on my bed completely motionless. I couldn't move, the pain all over my body was too intense. It felt like if I move, I might break something.

You see, my mom didn't really seem to care; she left about two months ago. Packed a few of her things and just ran away. My dad's always throwing things around because he's always pissed off about something. He even throws me around like I'm a rag doll. My mom ran off because she couldn't handle it. (More like didn't handle it... ) And yet, strange enough, my dad's new girlfriend happens to be my best friend, Ringo's, mother.

This is a really strange situation for me because I remember going over to Ringo's house whenever I could get away from my private hell. There are two reasons I chose Ringo's place-#1: Ringo's my best and only friend at this time and point. #2: Her family always seemed so perfect. Her parents never fought, (as far as I knew), the house was always kept real neat, and everybody seemed happy.

But now I'm guessing that they weren't happy, because Leesa, Ringo's mom, is now dating my dad. The main catch to the entire thing is that Leesa acts like nothing's going on. My dad even throws Ringo around once in a while. But when my dad is not around, Leesa will talk to us about random stuff. She sort of weirds me out now, but I can deal with it.

After a couple minutes of helpless lying around, I found just enough relief to sit up and look around. Ringo was already up and standing in my doorway. She was always up before me. She noticed I was awake and said, "Morning. Your dad's out shopping or something like that. My mom sort of wants to talk to both of us."
"What's up now?" I asked trying to avoid the pain in my leg.
"I don't know... She just wants to talk to us. Oh, your cousin called," Ringo quickly replied.
"Which one? I've got five!" I asked.
"The only one that you get along with... Billy!" She answered impatiently.

Ringo and I walked down the stairs and into the living room to find Leesa sitting on the couch with her arms crossed. Ringo and I sat on the chairs across from the couch. Then Leesa looked over and began talking. "I'm so tired of seeing you guys be thrown around like newspaper. I know, you think you've got no other place to go... But Maria, your cousin Billy called today... I talked to him about it; you guys could go to his house... Live a harmless life there, you know?"

It seemed really awkward that she just now began thinking about us running away; and she seemed so enthusiastic about it. It actually sounded really nice, but I was still cautious about what was going on. I looked over at Ringo, who looked about as confused as I felt. Then I looked over to Leesa and said "Sounds great, but... How the hell do you expect us to get there? And plus, what will we do if my dad finds us? What will you tell him when he asks 'where did those goddamn kids go?' What would you say?"
"Well, I could simply say 'I don't know', then sidetrack him, you know... Don't worry, he won't find you if my life depends on it! You should call Billy back and talk to him. Don't worry, your father shouldn't be back for a couple of hours... He's most likely at the bar... " Leesa seemed so confident about all this.

So, I called Billy back. My aunt Amy answered the phone. "Oh my god! Are you guys going to come out here?" I heard Billy in the background saying, "Mom, if that's Maria, I need the phone...I need to talk to her dammit!" A couple seconds later, Billy said, "Hello?"
"Hi. I heard you called...What's up?" I began.
"Well, um...Leesa said something about you and Ringo might run away and come down here," Billy said.
"Um, yeah. Leesa talks about a lot of stuff. You see, I don't even know how to get there, or if it's okay that we stay!" I was complaining.
"Apparently my mom likes the idea, and if you do come down, you can hang with me and my friends...I know they're weird, but they don't bite! We've got a couple extra rooms, so if you wanna stay here, it's all cool," He said calmly.
"Oh...I guess. Well, if I'm going to be there ASAP, I better get going and pack some stuff. I guess I'll see you soon!" I said.
"Okay! I'll see you in a couple days!" Billy said excitedly.
Ringo looked at me and asked, "So, what's going on?"
Then I said, "We need to get ready... We're going."

Leesa came in my room while Ringo and I were packing and said, "Hurry up. I've packed you a couple things to eat, a couple things to drink, so all you have to do is have other things ready. Oh, one more thing, here's forty dollars...I know it's not much, but it will help. I'm sure you guys have a few bucks!" She was right when she said "a few". I had ten bucks and 85 cents. Ringo had 11 dollars even. We walked out of the front door and down the street hoping that no one would notice us or find us; especially my dad.
