"Close your eyes baby," Billie whispered into her ear as he slowly led her from his car.
"Where are you taking me?" she asked, excited and curious.
"You'll see," he said grinning, hoping it was what she thought.
What he had really done is lead her out of town and onto a field where a meteor shower was taking place.
"Open your eyes and look up," he whispered, not wanting to disturb the peaceful silence that surrounded them.
She did what she was told and gasped at the sight, "Just like when Joey was born," she muttered.
They stood, Billie's arms wrapped around her waist, her head resting on his shoulder both looking up at the amazing site above their heads.
Billie smiled and kissed the top of her head, his mind going back to that day 11 years ago.
Billie lay on the couch and closed his eyes, it was March 1995 and he just finished up with the Dookie tour.
"Billie? Is that you?" a woman's voice came floating down from the stairs.
Billie smiled, "Yes Adie, it is," he said.
"BILLIE!" she shouted jumping on him,
"Oof," he grunted, she was now 9 months pregnant and due any day with their baby boy, who had yet to be named.
They lay together on the couch Billie telling her tales of the tour when they both felt something wet.
"Oh shit..." Adrienne said, "I think he wants out," she said.
"C'mon lets go!" Billie said helping her up and taking her to the car.
"Can we see Dr. Marshall, immediately, it's time," Billie asked the receptionist urgently as his wife was beside him now getting contractions.
She was about to page him when he appeared, "Mr. Armstrong, you're going to have to stay back here while I check on her, I'll call you in when I'm done," and took off with his pregnant wife. Their hands staying clasped together until their fingers couldn't touch.
Billie jumped up and called Mike and Tre on the payphone. He was now getting fidgety and nervous.
Mike appeared first; he hugged his friend of 13 years, and "ready man?" he asked.
"No," he stated nervously, "Will I be a good dad? How can I live up to mine?" he looked up at his friend who smiled a small smile at him.
"You will, this kid will adore you BJ, don't worry," Mike said calmly just as Tre arrived and the doctor came out,
"You can see her Mr. Armstrong," he said smiling.
Billie smiled at his friends, and they both gave him a hug and he turned his back and walked down the hall.
He entered the white and yellow room with the bed in the middle that held his wife.
"Hey," he said quietly sitting next to her taking her hand.
"He finally let you in here," Adie moaned, and tightened her hold on his hand as another came.
The doctor came in and measured, "5 centimeters, halfway there," he informed and left again.
Adie lay her head back on the stiff white pillow sighing, "He won't come out soon enough," she complained.
Billie smiled softly, running his free hand through his hair.
The waiting lasted until 2 hours later when the doctor came back in, he measured and looked, "We are ready," he said.
Adie looked at her husband of a little less than a year in panic, "I'm not ready, Billie," she said tears coming into her eyes.
"You'll do great babe, we have to go," he said and walked next to her bed holding her hand on the way to the delivery room. He saw Mike and Tre standing there and waved.
As they walked down the white hallways of the hospital at 9:17PM Adrienne began to think whether she'd be a good mother. Billie told her she would. They had arrived at the delivery room.
"C'mon, one last one Mrs. Armstrong!" The doctor said urgently.
Adrienne with sweat on her face and her hand gripping her husbands tightly she pushed. A few seconds later crying filled the delivery room.
"It's a boy," the doctor stated giving the little boy to a nurse to clean off and wrap in a blanket.
The married, tired couple watched the nurse clean off the little child that was theirs.
"You're done Adie," Billie said kissing her sweaty forehead.
Adrienne smiled tiredly, "I know," she said looking at him.
"I love you," they said at the same time and laughed.
"Here's your baby," the nurse said quietly giving the little boy with wisps of brown hair on his head to his mother.
He opened his eyes which appeared to be the color of his fathers and looked up at her in wonder.
"He's beautiful," Adie whispered. Billie nodded not being able to say anything else.
"Here, you hold him," Adie said handing him to Billie. Billie looked at his child in his arms.
"Joseph Marciano Armstrong," Adrienne stated. "That's his name,"
Billie looked at her and grinned, "Good name," he said and looked at the baby, "Hello Joey, I am your daddy, and your mommy's on the bed, your going to meet your uncles and god fathers in a while," he said tears in his eyes.
Billie sat down and held him,
"I'll go get your family and friends," the nurse said. Billie just nodded in thanks. He kept on watching the boy sleep in his arms.
Tre, Mike, Ollie, Lisea and Anastasia appeared at the door. They all went to Billie. Who looked up and smiled.
"Everyone I want you to meet Joseph Marciano Armstrong," he said quietly in respect to his sleeping wife and son.
Joey was passed around, first to his grandma then to the women and finally to his friends.
"Hey Joey! I'm your Uncle Tre, I'm going to make you a drummer boy, when you are older, and you're going to attract all the ladies!" he said making everyone laugh. Mike took him.
"Hey Joey, I'm your Uncle Mike, and don't listen to the other guy here, he doesn't know what he's talking about," the baby yawned as the nurse reappeared in the room.
"I have to take him to nursery to make sure he's ok now," she said taking the little Armstrong away.
Crying filled the house two weeks as Billie lay awake in bed. Adie stirred beside him.
"I'll get him," he whispered, "Go back to sleep," he kissed her.
Adie mumbled something then fell back asleep.
Billie walked into Joey's room, picking him up, "You need to stay asleep Joe Joe," he whispered sitting on the rocking chair trying to calm him down.
Joey's cries quieted down to whimpers as the last tears fell down his cheeks.
Then it was silent, "Time for sleep," Billie said rocking him, but he wouldn't go.
Words came into Billie's mind; I'm having trouble trying to sleep...
Billie had the first verse of another song in his head.
He set the baby in the crib, ran and got his black notebook and started writing.
I'm having trouble trying to sleep
I'm counting sheep but running out
As time ticks by
And still I try
No rest for crosstops in my mind
On my own... here we go
The couple was still staring up into the sky filled with flying stars.
"He was such a good baby, now he's a little troublemaker," Billie commented.
"He takes after you," Adie said giggling, and ran.
"HEY!" Billie yelled and chased after her, now getting what she said.
They felt like they were young again, running through the field with stars above them.
Nothing could ruin their love now.
"Where are you taking me?" she asked, excited and curious.
