Sex, Drugs and Taco Bell, chapter 4
Lizzie's Point of View
Moon came over and the person who had entered walked over to Tré without even glancing behind her. As she moved into the light, I made out the small figure of a woman. I looked over at Tré and watched his face light up as his ocean blue eyes saw her.
"Britt!" he grinned.
"Tré, hi!" she beamed back. They shared a hug, and Tré kissed the top of her head.
I looked at Moon, and she lowered her voice, "That's Britt, she's dating Tré. She's a real sweetie, outgoing and all, an awesome woman. She'll like you."
"I hope so," I said nervously.
"So uhm, best get home now," Moon told me. I nodded in agreement.
"Bye everybody," we called out. I receieved many a hug, and Britt gave me a grin and a handshake. I opened the door and stepped out onto the paved sidewalk. The cold washed over me as if I had plunged into a deep lagoon. A shiver ran down my spine, and I wrapped my arms around me in an attempt to keep any warmth I had left inside of me.
"Looks like a storm," Moon said, simply, whilst looking up at the sky.
What was normally dazzling blue with cotton clouds, was dark, murky, and depressing. But I liked it. I hurriedly unlocked the car and jumped into the driver's seat and forced the keys into the ignition. Moon got into the seat beside me, and I started the engine.
A bolt of lightning crashed down, and I jumped, lowering my foot onto the accelerator. Moon laughed slightly at my actions, and I felt a scowl in me. I tossed it aside and concentrated on the road. This wasn't the best time to let my thoughts run free. I turned the corner and parked the car. We both got out, and I slung my guitar back over me. We ran up the stairs as the lightning struck the earth. Thunder resounded in my head, and I threw the door open. The car keys got thrown onto the table, and I sunk onto the couch.
I hadn't been sitting down for long when a peircing scream and an awful smashing noise hit the air. My eyes widened, and I looked at Moon. Without saying anything, we went to look outside. Amongst the disaster, two cars had collided into each other. Nobody was around to help them. Lightning was everywhere. The cars were only attracting it. Moon and I saw a huge bolt heading for around this part of town. We would let it pass, then go down to the victims of the crash. A woman was running out though. My eyes squinted to look at her, before being filled with horror and distraught.
I did what my reflexes did and screamed out, "Mom! No! The lightning! MOM!"
She couldn't hear me. It was too late anyway. The lightning had struck her down.
The tears stung my eyes, and I ran down the stairs, slipping and sliding from the rain. I skipped the last few and ran as fast as I could over to my mother. The people involved in the car crash were alright. Only one person was injured. He was being taken in an ambulance that somebody must have phoned for. These actions were blocked out from my head. I was bent over my mom. Her body limp and her chest heavy.
I looked up as the rain hurled down and yelled out, "Is this my fucking punishment? Killing my mother?"
People were crowded around me and trying to get a look at her, but I just screamed at them and bent low over her, as if I was protecting her.
"C'mon, let's give the girl some space here," a paramedic shunned them away and placed a hand on my arm.
I looked up at him. "Can you bring her back?"
"I can't work miracles. We can do whatever we can to try though. Let go of her." He prised my arms that were clasped onto her. "What's her name?"
"Roxie," I murmered. Her flaming red hair blew in the wind and the tears fell.
I watched him pick her up with ease and carry her into the ambulance. The hospital wasn't far from here, yet the ride seemed to last forever. I don't know what I was kidding myself. She was dead.
