The Way We Were, chapter 3
As things began to calm down in Rachel's hospital room, the living room of the Armstrong residence was anything but. "Adrienne, how could you do this to me?! I bet its Billy Bisson's too!"
"Billie, you don't understand..."
"Don't understand! Of course I do, you had another kid in Minnesota! How could you expect me not to find out?"
"Billie, she's yours OK? It happened the last time we were together before we stopped seeing each other. When I got engaged to Billy Bisson, I gave away the baby after it was born because, first, he would have never let me keep him, and it kept reminding me of you, and how we were not together. By the time you asked me to move to California, the baby was almost a year old. I vowed to try to forget about her, but I never could."
"Adie, how can I believe you after the fact that you lied for eleven years? And we never kept secrets from each other, even when we communicated when we weren't together. I could have been there for you, why didn't you tell me?"
"Billie, I couldn't, I was scared and had no idea what to do... "
"But you should have told me before we got married Adrienne!" Billie Joe was now trying hard not to cry.
"Billie, all the proof you need is on the birth certificate. It's in the same drawer as the baby picture." Adrienne opened the drawer and pulled it out. She handed the document to her husband.
"I have to go."
"Billie, wait where... "
"I need to be alone!" With that he walked out their bedroom door, and down the stairs. His sons were startled.
"Daddy what were you and Mommy arguing about?" Jakob asked.
His father tried to answer the question in the best way possible. "Um, me and your mother just had a little argument. I'll see you two in a couple of days. Look after your mother." He proceeded to walk out the door.
Upstairs Adrienne was recalling the memories she had of what happened. It was the early summer of '92 and Green Day was promoting their new album Kerplunk! Billie and Adie had to been together for about a year. The boys were playing in Minnesota for two days, and were spending a couple of extra days in Minneapolis, so Billie Joe and his "Adie" could spend more time together.
Billie Joe pushed Adrienne on the bed while both were kissing each other like it was the only thing that was keeping them alive. Billie quickly searched his pocket for a condom; he didn't find one. "Adie, babe, I don't have a condom. Do you still want to continue?"
"Billie, just shut up and undress me!" After that both proceeded to make beautiful love to each other.
The next time the lovers did that was over a year later. After Billie left he broke up with her, but kept contact and confined everything to each other. Eight weeks later Adrienne was late. She had it confirmed that she was pregnant. On the off chance that Billie Joe would be profess his love to her. Soon he was getting serious with this collage girl. When she was well into her second trimester she had met Billy Bisson. She didn't to give up the baby but Billy would never date her other wise, and it always depressed her.
Every time the baby kicked she kept wishing that she were engaged to Billie Joe. She was excited about becoming a mother, but wished that it wasn't happening this way. Adrienne went into labor on March 10, 1993. At 11:45 PM the next night. Her brother Steven took Adrienne to the hospital. Several times during labor she called out for Billie Joe.
She had given birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she named Rachel Michelle. By the time Adrienne had to give up the baby, she was in hysterics. In the short time she had spent with her daughter, she never wanted to let her go.
For months afterwards she was severely depressed. Finally in late January Billy Bisson proposed; she said yes even though her heart was 2,000 light-years away. She was still in contact with Billie Joe when she was engaged. A few weeks later Billie Joe asked her out to California. She came out in mid June after she graduated collage. The day she arrived he proposed. Two weeks later she was married to the love of her life, and pregnant with her second child with Billie.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she remembered it. She had just heard Billie Joe slam the door. Adrienne was afraid for her marriage, she and Billie Joe had some rough patches but none compared to this. The boys started to run upstairs to find their mother and some answers. "Mommy, where did Daddy go?" Jakob asked.
"Sweetie, I don't know. I really don't know."
