It Will All Be Over Soon (sequal to We've Made It So Far), chapter 1
I hiss and I feel the massive lump on my forehead. A strong dizziness passes over me as I try and sit up. I feel as though I've taken a metal baseball bat to my skull. I hold onto my forehead and keep my eyes shut tight. I felt a cold pairs of hands on my face. I wince as the icy fingers run over my excruciating wound. I slowly crack my eyes to see burgundy lips, black eyes, and blond hair filled with every color imaginable. I smile as I see Calli standing over me. I smirk crookedly and give her a toothy grin.
"You're so weird," she insults while grinning.
"Just get off your ass and give me a hand here." I laugh when she rolls her eyes.
"Stupid bastard, what did you so this time?"
"Goober pulled open a locker on me when I was running to get to class."
"He's gonna get you worse, if you keep calling him Goober. I think he much prefers Gooby..." she says matter-of-factly.
She pulls me up and I wipe off my black jeans and fix my wrist bands. I see her eyeing me.
"What?"
"Oh nothing, just that you looked so distraught over your precious bracelets."
"They are not bracelets...they're wrist bands." I act like a kid when somebody calls their action figure a doll.
"It will be okay," Calli says patting my back. "I understand you have strong feelings." she pretends to cry and I pick her up. She screams.
"Yah ,who's got strong feelings now? Huh?" I tease as I walk her down the hallway near and empty locker.
"No don't I'll kick your ass!" She's putting up a playful fight but is giggling to much to stop me.
I place her in the locker and quickly shut the door. I hear her muffled yells but one rings out really loud.
"Joseph Marciano Armstrong! Open this locker NOW!" I hiss at the pain she'll put me through. She never says my full name. I open the locker and am greeted my a slap.
"Ow...you didn't have to slap me..."
"Yeah I did 'cause now you won't do it again."
"Unless I have a hockey mask."
"Yeah but then something else is gonna be quite sore," as she looks down.
I cringe and help her out of the locker as we head out of the abandoned school building. As we walked down the block towards my home I remembered that I had to walk Jared home from his first day of school. As me and Calli turned back I had remembered my own first day of school.
I wasn't afraid, or nervous. I was excited at the thought I would meet so many new kids, not having very many friends my own age. My dad wasn't there though, he was but he left before I woke Up. I tried to remember how brave I was as my mother held onto Jake as she cried. I smile when I hear the familiar screech of joy as petite arms are thrown around my waist. I look down and see a small boy engulfed by a head of dark brown hair.
"Hey kid how was school?"
I heard a muffled explanation.
"Uh, okay."
I picked him up and started to walk down the road so I could get home and sleep. My first day of school wasn't at all glorious, and it never was. I'm just glad Calli was there to help me. It had started out boring as usual as every teacher explained how we should not act in their class rooms. I basically narrowed the list down to not setting the classroom and/or students on fire. Calli and I had almost every class together except for Spanish because Calli had decided on becoming a civilized part of society and learned French. I had hardly noticed when we made it to my house and would have probably walked right on by if Jared hadn't basically dragged me to the front door.
I invited Calli to stay for dinner and she graciously accepted. I hadn't shared any information about my school day as Jake and Jared gave every second of every minute to what had went on with their day. I sat back listening to the two of them back and forth and laughing when my dad puts his hand over his mouth and looks completely lost as Jake describes his math problems and how they are figuring out the areas of a quadrilateral. I made it easier when I told him they were seeing how big squares were. Sadly enough that was the only thing I had said all night. I was pleased when my mother hadn't noticed my baseball sized lump behind my fortress of hair. I had wanted hair like my dad's which would take me years of hard work but so far I had conquered the curliness and had gotten it to be strait unlike my brothers' hair which had both become o frizz ball and neither had ever managed or wanted to keep it neat.
"So Joey how was your day?"
I shrug, "Eh."
"That's all we get after these two presentations?"
I shrug again, "Eh."
I laugh when my dad throws mashed potatoes at me and I rear back and aim for him.
"Wait"
He screams as he grabs a towel to cover his hair and I do the same. Without our hair we were nothing. Then it started full fledged food fight. We all laughed and screamed as Calli and my mom had dived behind the island as we prepared ourselves for a long battle. Eventually I ended up looking like I was in combat with a pan on head and a cookie sheet as my shield, I had a giant spoon filled peas awaiting my enemy. I felt shaking and looked around to see who had fallen but no one had. The shaking continued as we started to scream. We run through to the doorway seeing who was with who. I had collected Jake and Jared as I made my way from the kitchen into the dining room underneath the table. I was soon joined by my father with Calli and after a few seconds my father left to find my mother. The entire thing had lasted a few minutes but seemed like forever. I had Jake beneath one arm and my other around Calli as she cradled Jared in her arms. Where are they? Come on hurry up, please hurry. Please come back, please come back!
