The Strangest Combination: Dreams & Reality, chapter 1

"Oh my God!" I said aloud, reading the big block letters flash across the screen. That would be awesome, a dream come true. That would be the best 2 months of my life. EVER.

Okay, you're probably thinking, 'Where is this going?', and reading what I've just wrote, I probably would be too. Anyway, about me. My name is Keira and I'm 14 years old. I live in Manhattan, NY. My home, well, my apartment is pretty cool. I live right in the city and even though it is as busy as hell, that's the way I like it. My apartment is quite near the top floor so I can see for miles. I don't want to sound sappy or anything, but I love watching the sunset from my window, it's beautiful. My life is made up of friends, family and music. I don't know what I would be without any of them. As Billie Joe Armstrong would say, "Music is the air that I breathe, y'know, it's the blood that runs through my veins, it's what keeps me alive." Yeah, that's another thing, Green Day are also a huge part of my life. I drive my Mum and Dad crazy but blasting my stereo with classic songs like 'Welcome to Paradise' and 'Basket Case' and of course after watching Bush be a complete sucker I do like to play American Idiot and all the other songs that lash out against the American government.

Anyway, enough about me for the moment. It was one of the last days of the summer vacation, so as you might have guessed, a miserable rainy day and I was just stuck on the computer. I was flicking through my search engine on the Internet, looking for any Green Day info I didn't already know about (not likely!) and I came across this website which did Green Day competitions. I decided to have a go as I was known for wasting my phone credit by phoning in to enter competitions and never winning. All I ever won was a telling off by my Mom for asking for more money. I clicked on the link and was met by this huge banner, flashing multicolored across the screen. 'GO ON TOUR WITH GREEN DAY FOR 2 MONTHS!' It read.

I scrolled down to see a list of things that would be happening like, band practice every evening with Green Day, shopping for tour outfits, a free flight to Oakland, CA, meeting the whole crew including Rob Cavallo, Adrienne Armstrong and Ronnie Blake, lunch with Green Day at Rudy's Can't Fail café in Emeryville, dinner with Mike, drumming lessons with Tré, acoustic songs and shopping with Billie Joe, fashion designing for Adeline Street with Adrienne, backstage passes for every concert when Green Day are on tour around the USA, a special mention on the very last gig PLUS tons of Green Day merchandise, $1000 for spending money and a free digital state-of-the-art camera and video recorder to capture your experiences.

I couldn't believe it afterwards, all that, just for entering a competition. The competition question was, 'What was Billie, Mike & Tré's first album?' I automatically thought it would be '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours' but then I read it again and realized that it was a bit of a trick question as Green Day's first album was '1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours' but that wasn't with Tré, the first Green Day album with Tré was 'Kerplunk!'. I saw the phone number and grabbed my mobile and punched in the numbers. The operator asked me to either press 1, if I thought it was '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours'. 2, if I thought it was 'Dookie'. Or 3, if I thought it was 'Kerplunk!' I put the phone down, for some reason, feeling excited but I tried not to get my hopes up as I was hardly the only one who knew the answer.

I saved the website for easy access and went on a different website. I was at the moment, creating my own Green Day website, but unfortunately it wasn't going too well. I hadn't had a single visitor. I persuaded my friends to visit it but they never have. I might have to do with the fact that they don't like Green Day and would be constantly on it if it was a website about Eminem or some R&B artist. But that wasn't me. I was so different from my friends it was unbelievable. Obviously, we had some things in common, but when it came to music, you wouldn't think we were friends unless you saw us together. My friends also live in the city. My best friend, Emma, lived on the next block, so it wasn't that far away. We all managed to work out a way so we could all walk to school together that we've been using for the past year or so. I hate coming back after the vacations because I'm always in major panic if I've done all my homework and got all my equipment ready.

I went on my website I was making and started editing it so it looked half-decent, I suppose. I didn't think much more about the competition until I got a phone call from the operator to give my home address and details. After that I soon forgot about it, occasionally thought about how frickin' awesome it would be to win, but I stopped myself before I started getting all my hopes up.
