Pâle Septembre, chapter 3
She woke reluctantly to sloppy kisses being plated all along her cheek. She groaned in annoyance, shifting in her perfectly comfortable position--refusing to open her eyes to the sunlight she felt shinning against her back.
"Billie," She moaned when the kisses didn't stop. "Billie, not now. I was asleep." she complained pulling the sheets over her head.
She felt Billie shift next to her obviously just waking up.
"What honey?" He asked groggily, sitting up in the bed confused--his hair every which way and his eyes squinted shut against the morning sun.
Adrienne giggled when she realized the source of the sloppy kisses. She felt two tiny hands grab her cheeks and pinch them together, giggling in pure entertainment.
"Joey," She smiled up at him, opening her eyes to see his face two inches from hers--smiling his big toothless smile.
"Wake up, Mommy!" He shrieked, expanding his smile when Adrienne persisted to tickle his stomach. "Mommy!" he shrieked again.
Billie remained sitting up in pure confusion, his eyes slightly more open as he looked around obliviously.
"Daddy!" Joey jumped from Adrienne's assault and tackled his father, who fell back against the bed from impact. It took him a while to realize where he was and who was attacking him--but when it was clarified, he smiled brightly and wrapped his arms around his son, pulling him into a tight embrace.
"Daddy! I can't breathe!"
"I know," Billie smiled pretending to fall back asleep with the boy pressed against his chest.
"Daaaddddyyyyy" He giggled when Billie Joe began to snore noisily.
Soon Joey's giggles where chorused with Jakob who had crawled on top of Adrienne's stomach and was resting his tired head on her breast bone. Adrienne smiled in perfect content as she stroked his brown hair watching Billie now blowing raspberries on Joey's stomach.
Somewhere between the tickling and horseplay Billie leaned in for a quick kiss and caressed her cheek unconsciously. Adrienne always swooned slightly at the instinctive ways Billie possessed. They way he always planted kisses on the same spot everyday as if it was his daily routine. Even when he was on tour he carried these habits of calling at certain times.
The giggling died down when Billie reminded everyone that school was indeed today and that adequate preparations were in the son's near future. It wasn't till Adrienne made to get out of bed when the strong sensation of pain surged through her body did she remember the events of last night. The reminisces seemed to hit her like a bullet causing her to pause slightly in her movements and waver in her spot warily. Billie flashed her a concerned glance which she waved off instantly yet remained standing next to the bedside stationary.
She could have sworn it was just a bad dream; nothing that dramatic could have happened that fast. She sat back down on their bed solemnly, glancing back at Billie to see he was still staring at her uncertainly. She flashed him a smile and mouthed "tired" before standing back up. She wouldn't let this mess up her life--or anyone one else's for that fact. She had a responsibility--clean her boys up, and take them to school--she didn't have time to feel sorry for herself.
She picked up Jakob and carried the giggling mess of smiles and tickles downstairs and set him down on the counter so he could watch her make breakfast like he always did. In the middle of the stirring of the pancake batter and the humming of the Miles Davis song repeating in her head she noticed a dark circle peaking from under her loose shirt. She cursed silently as she raised her hand in the air, causing the shirt sleeves to rise up on her arm revealing a blackened bruise lining up and down her forearm.
She pushed back the welling feeling of desperation as she tugged at her sleeves and continued making breakfast. She only allowed an outlet of emotion when Billie walked into the cabinet door instantly allowing the curse words to flow from his mouth.
"Shit," he yelled before widening his eyes at his kids and letting out another "fuck."
He clamped his hand over his mouth and stared down at the two pair of innocent brown eyes blinking up at him.
"Shit," We heard from the entry way to the kitchen as barely dressed Tre stumbled into the room. "Since when did stinging caterpillars adopt some devious design to hurt the people who love them the most? FUCK this hurts like a BITCH."
Billie waved his arms at Tre and hissed a "Shut the fuck up! You're corrupting the youth."
"What the fuck, man--what youth?"
"Them!" Billie pointed exaggeratedly at the two boys who were silently looking from Billie to Tre.
"Shit," Tre apologized squatting down eye level with the two boys. "Look, boys, never act like your father and myself. Never say the words fuck, shit, cunt, asshole, bitch, bastard..."
Adrienne threw a grape at Tre's head in annoyance. She wasn't quiet ready for her little boys to be exposed to Tre's influence.
Adrienne served the pancakes to her family plus Tre and settled down in her chair nest to Billie. She felt immensely fake at the moment--the way she smiled at her two boys and ate her own breakfast in a charismatic manor. She secretly wanted to throw up everything that touched her lips....and her stomach was starting to catch on.
"Why are you here?" Billie finally asked Tre after 3 minutes or so of silent eating.
"I don't remember" Tre said transfixed, pausing from eating for a second to stare into space. Adrienne couldn't help but foreshadow the reason for Tre being there. She knew why he was there, as did Billie Joe who looked over at Adrienne unsurely.
"We're leaving earlier than planned?" Billie asked in more of a statement then a question, his head dropping a bit to look down at his pancakes in extreme interesting.
Tre's face lit up and nodded. "That's the one. The tour is kicking off early."
Adrienne bit her lip and grinned a little bit for show; her heart sinking further into her chest. The saying that there's no where to go but up in a situation of desperation was just proved incorrect. Despite her fake proud smile she adopted she desperately tried to push back the growing tension in her bones.
"You're leaving again, Daddy?" Joey asked from across the table, his smile dropping to a pitiful frown.
"Yeah, Joey," Billie Joe said leaning over and ruffling his already tangled hair. "but it's going to be different this time. We're not leaving the country and I'm going to be near home pretty much half the time. It's just a small tour; I can visit almost every week."
Joey smiled sadly and straightened the hair Billie had messed. Adrienne looked down at her plate, her will to pretend warring off slowly as her eyes kept on stealing glances at her sleeves; making sure none of her secrets were noticeable.
She jumped slightly when she felt Billie's hand curl into hers under the table. She looked up at him to see his smile stretched across his face. A hopeful smile; a reassuring smile-- a smile that was just enough to calm her nerves back down.
