Rebellious, chapter 1

It all begins with dancing

LANE
I hold my mother's hand to cross the street.

I'm old enough to do it by myself of course but it is sort of a habit I guess after all these years of having to do it. My hair is up in a tight ponytail and I love it when mom makes it like that for me. I am like the Sporty Spice. Well, I feel like her anyway. Like always I am the first one to get there. Mom is often complaining on why I have to come so early but I like the quiet of the room before the others get here.

"I'm leaving now ok?" Mom says to me and gives me a kiss.

"Sure. Come and pick me up at eight." She nods and gets away, putting her hands in her pockets, probably to find her keys or something.

I take off my jacket and my trousers and go into the room to sit on the floor and wait for the others. Nora comes second most of the times. Dep and Helen always come together because their mothers work at the same restaurant so they bring them in once their shift is over.

What a surprise, they are the first to appear this time. Helen lets her hair loose because first of all she never sweats like we do and second she has amazing hair. All the boys go crazy once they see a blonde.

"Hey Lane!" Dep is the first one to say something to me.

"Hey," I answer and wait for them to take off their jackets and trousers like I had done.

"Listen tonight is Nora's tenth birthday," Helen tells me excited.

"Oh yeah! So we were thinking that maybe we can ask Miss Turner to let us sing happy birthday to her at the end of the class," Dep suggests, already warming up by stretching her legs and arms. I decide to get up and join her. Helen does the same.

"Sure that sounds cool. Funny thing James has his birthday too tomorrow," I say spinning around with my arms up high.

"You would know... " Helen sings and they both giggle.

"Guys I do not love James! I hate him!" James is my crush. Thankfully Miss Turner comes to the rescue, accompanied by Nora who is looking very excited. We all start shouting happy birthday at her, squealing and hugging her and jumping and things like that.

HELEN
Once Nora comes in we all wish her happy birthday. Now we are all ten years old so it's cool. Nora smiles sweetly at us and says 'thank you' and stuff and gets ready for the class. Miss Turner is already fixing up the record player.

"Alright girls... " she always says that before we begin. "What song should we do first?"

Of course we all shout for the same thing. The Spice Girls. We all love that band. When we dance "If You Wanna Be My Lover" I kind of day dream that I am Melanie C and stuff. It's really cool.

We really dance that song very well because we all like it so much. Although Nora should probably be Melanie C because she wears these cute glitters on her face today because it's her birthday and all. And I would be Baby Spice since my hair is blonde.

I'm quite proud of that. I heard from my friend Madison that Nick liked me because I was the only blonde of the entire class.

You should see Dep though.

She is the exact opposite. Her hair is so black... It really is very black. And her skin is also darker than ours. Even her eyes are really dark brown.
We start dancing and I feel better. My parents are breaking up so I don't want to be at home.

The girls and Miss Turner are fun to be with and all.

Lane knows the lyrics to all the songs Miss Turner teaches us. We all have heard them many times but for some strange reason she is the only one that remembers them. It's pretty cool actually because she lipsticks while we dance and it is like she's actually singing. She has a nice voice in reality too. She always sings at school.

DEP
I like coming to Miss Turner's dance class but sometimes I wish she taught us different things. I love the songs we dance like all the Spice Girls or Dancing Queen and everything but I feel like our dance moves are weak. I want to jump around and impress everybody. No I'm not full of myself it's just that according to my mother I have way too much energy for my own good and that taking this dancing lessons is the only way to take it out and be calmer during the rest of the day.

I don't see why I should act like a quiet girl when I have so much fun being loud. I keep wanting mom to go out so that I can put the music on, raise the volume as high as my ears can bear and jump on the bed until I touch the ceiling.
So I am pretty much the worst of us four because I dance like I don't like it. I am jumpy and Miss Turner says that I seem to be rushing through the number. Whenever she tells me that, I start looking at Nora and trying to imitate her because she's the best. And then it's Helen because she is the thinnest of all of us.

We finish the class an hour and a half later and I am sweating so much I disgust myself. I hate this thing about me; Nora seems to be untouched like she has not moved at all, Helen's blond hair gets a little darker and her skin glows so sweat looks nice on her and Lane... well Lane is acting cool about it so even though she is as wet as I am you don't seem to notice. We all stand outside the building to wait for our moms and even though we've been told to wear our jackets I'm not cold at all. Probably because of the exercise.

"Did you do that math problem?" Nora asks, resting her back on the wall.

"No," I answer quickly. Our teacher told us that it was a difficult one so we did not have to do it. Why should I bother then?

"No. I tried. Hard." Lane says and looks at her feet. I don't know if she tells the truth because she hates math but her sisters like it so it's a possibility that they helped her.

"No me neither," Helen responds. She is ashamed to say that and I am sure she tried and failed; something that she hates.

"How about you?" I ask Nora.

"Hell it's my birthday I have the right not to do homework for one day. Besides I have a whole weekend to work on it."
At this point I'm wondering where our mothers are. They're ten minutes late and I am starting to freeze now and it's really not like them to be late. And there comes Nora's mom and Nora's face gets all sneaky so I know something's going on.

NORA
I am so excited! Mom promised she'd allow me one big favor for my tenth birthday and now there she is! I look at her with what I'm guessing is one of the greatest smiles and all the others are wondering what's going on. Helen even asks what's the deal.

"Well my mom called all your mothers and you can come and sleep at my place tonight so we can celebrate my birthday." They all look at me and none of them believes it. This is the first time ever that we are going to have a sleepover. Lane and Helen turn their heads at my mother, Dep still looks at me.

"It's true. Mom isn't it true?"

"Yes very much so. Your mothers are on board, you can all stay with Nora and have your own party and as long as you keep yourselves well mannered and safe you can also spend the whole day together tomorrow."
Now that my mom tells them, they all start screaming and I do too of course.

This is fantastic; I've spent all day preparing my room. I've rent two movies and Courtney went to buy us cookies and juice. We stop the yelling only when we are told so and we all run to mom's car, singing "Staying Alive" a song Miss Turner had taught us last year and apparently it became a hit as a soundtrack of a movie. I've never seen that movie but I like the song.

My house is much further from the place we take our dance lessons than the other three's. They all go on foot while I always have to wait for either my mom or Mr. Danny to come and pick me up with mom's car. I hate it. Time lost.
This time however it's gonna be great because I have my three best friends with me. And for the first time ever I am allowed to sit on the front seat which is great.

"Hey look you have a cassette player!" Helen is thrilled. I never use the cassette player because I am too bored to make my own tapes. Lane sometimes makes me but they never leave my room until I've played them so much they can not be heard any longer.

"Yeah!" Lane opens her bag and takes out a cassette and the screaming starts again. Lane always makes awesome tapes, full of all our favorite songs so I believe our enthusiasm is justified. She hands me the cassette and I quickly put it in, push the 'play' button and Madonna's "Get in Groove" is the first song so we all continue shouting.
We only listen to that, "Love Shack" by the B-50s and "Thriller" by Michael Jackson before we reach the house so I take the cassette out for us to listen in my room.

Dep runs towards the house, doing 'the wheel' on her way there and the rest of us walk.

Mrs. Hogart opens the door and we all say 'hi' and then the girls run to my room, while my mother tells me to wait a second so that she can say all the usual stuff: Not to be too loud, not to break anything, not to force my own wishes on the others... all things that get you down when your friends come over in other words.

HELEN
Nora is rich.

She has a nanny and a driver, her family has a housekeeper and her room has its own bath. It's all painted in pink and she has posters of the Spice Girls and some cool photos her mother has taken since that was her job when she was younger. I love her place. We all do because Lane can keep herself busy with the stereo, Dep jumps up and down the bed and I can play the guitar since both Nora and I take guitar lessons. She is totally lazy and all so I am better than her but she has cooler guitars because as I already said she's rich.

"This is the best day ever, we get to sleep over Nora's house! I love this!" Dep squeals and climbs the bed hugging a pillow. I go over to the guitar and sit on the floor as I tune it.

"I know this is so great we're gonna have so much fun!" Lane agrees and the three of them scream a little more. I laugh because it's a fun sight watching them moving their hands up and down and jumping and shouting. I was doing it too some minutes ago so I guess I looked funny too and all.

"Oh come on you party pooper let the guitar down and come dance!" Nora pulls me up and Lane puts the tape to play as we all join Dep on the bed. As soon as we hear "Tutti Frutti" we dance again. This is cool because it gets me stop thinking about my parents and how it is at home these days. I wish I could always stay at Nora's with her, Dep and Lane. Nick could maybe drop by some time and say hi and all. He is so handsome...

We dance through the whole tape, with no break, up or down the bed and then Nora suggests giving us all a makeover. Dep hates makeovers because she can't really sit still that long but I like them. We take terms and I am second after Lane. This time we do it chronologically.

"Okay what color do you want your eyes?"

"Aah, I really like your pink eye shadow."

"Hey I wanted the pink eye shadow!" I tell Lane. She turns back to look at me and I guess I have a good expression on my face or whatever because she agrees to let me have it and says she wants the gold one.

"Okay guys remember my mom can not find out about this or she will ground me and never let me have you over ever again." Nora tells us as she does Lane's eyes. She is cool like that, buying all this stuff the boys like but hiding it from her mother. She brings it to school and lends it to all of us. Of course we can not put eye shadows because our teachers might tell it to our parents but she has cool lip glosses and nail colors and all.

Somebody knocks the door and we all look at each other in panic. "Just one second!" Nora yells and starts hiding all the stuff while Lane disappears in the bathroom. Me and Dep put our bags against the door in case the person walks in before Nora says it's okay but that never happens. She moves her hands to tell us to take the bags away and once we do, she shouts 'Come in!'

Her mom tells us that we need to shower before dinner is ready and then we can borrow Nora's pajamas. We nod and once she goes, Lane appears with her gold eye shadow on, doing a dance move from 'Dancing Queen' and singing 'If one day your mom catches us I'll be far away to sunny Mexico'. We all laugh and continue with the make-up.

BILLIE
The place is still empty; people will arrive in an hour or so. We walk in and set our stuff on the 'stage' before Tre hands all three of us a joint.

"We really need to do something about this fucking microphone, last time I couldn't hear myself playing man," says Mike, lighting up his.

"The Beatles couldn't hear themselves and look how lucky they got," I answer him.

"Oh c'mon Billie, don't be such a fucking ass!" Mike snaps at me, while giving his lighter to Tre.

"I'm not the one who's being a fucking ass okay? You are for fuck's sake!"

"Why the hell am I the one who's screwing things up now hugh? What the fuck did I do? Because I didn't stay, hearing you whining for five fucking hours? Hell I stayed for three! And excuse me but you and Adrienne have already broken up two times okay? Even you know that you'll get back together."
I hate fighting with Mike. But I hate fighting with Mike when he is right even more.

"What-fucking-ever," I mumble taking a nice inhale of the cigarette stuck between my fingers. Classy way to end a fight right? What-fucking-ever anyway.

"Look you're the one who's always focusing on the music more than us so now I'm going to say what you would say if you were in my place. Let the music make it better man. And don't get all mad with us we're on your side."
Fuck that Could-Have-Been-A-Damn-Good-Lawyer.

"Yeah Bill come on we're too good to let it go dude," Tre says, already banging his drums. I shrug my shoulders, finish the joint and take Blue in my hands.

"Let's go." I tell them and we all get in our playing positions.

Soon it seems like the whole world came to Gilman Street to hear Green Day playing. The place is packed with people jumping like we were the fucking Clash. Whoever says that performing live is good for getting your aggression out is fucking right.

I am sweating and my eyes hurt but I haven't felt so good in a while now. I know this whole long distant relationship is a tough thing and I don't seem like the safest bet at the moment but fuck, I love Adie and she loves me so why can't we work things out?

I mean it I love her; I've met thousands of girls in my life, I have fucked with something like fifteen of them and I even played the boyfriend once or twice but Adrienne is just this completely new thing that drives me nuts and well I take the break-up kinda hard I guess.

But now I see all those people dancing because of something me and my best friends create and that is fucking brilliant. I wish I could live in a universe where the only thing you could do to survive is playing music in front of people who dance and scream because of you.

"Here we go again infatuation touches me just when I thought that it would end... " I look at Mike and he seems as into it as I am. He jumps and makes that hilarious devil faces and his hair go directly into his eyes. He fucking cracks me up that guy and his whole 'hippie look'.

So I close my eyes and promise myself that I am not going to think anything else apart from the music for the rest of the night. I'm just going to see these people dancing to the rhythm of my songs.

LANE
"Are you guys asleep?" I whisper and I hear three bodies moving against the mattress.

"I'm not," Dep speaks loud and clear so we all shush her in case Nora's parents hear.

"I just can't sleep tonight," I tell them.

"Well why don't you count sheep?"

"I hate that thing with sheep. Why don't we watch the second movie Nora rented? You know the Lion King."

"Yeah!"

"Dep shut your mouth! You're really loud."

"It's kinda late for the Lion King."

"Well why don't we read something? Yeah Helen can read a book to all of us she has the best reader voice." Our teacher always tells her to read.

"Well I do have Little Prince to read for Christmas so it would probably be less boring if we read it together... " Nora opens a lamp next to her bed and goes to her books, taking a light one and handing it to Helen. We all get closer to each other and I rest my head on Dep's knees as Helen opens the book.

"Grown-ups are so strange... " she reads and I close my eyes, promising myself that I am going to make this night and the next day unforgettable.
