The Day At The Diner, chapter 2
"So you're 19?" Billie asked.
"Yep," I replied.
"Are you in college?"
"Yes I am, studying to be a psychiatrist."
"Wow, big dreams, study hard."
"Will do." I smiled as he took a sip from his mug.
"It was really cool of you to have coffee with me," I told him.
"I was more than happy to, especially since you're not harassing me for an autograph...which I guess I don't mind much, but all the time?"
"He he, yeah...so how are your kids?"
"I don't know," he said. "They're alive."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"They never talk to me anymore. When I am home, the only time I ever see them is at dinner, then they lock themselves up in their rooms."
"I see," I said. He was opening up, this is good. Damn, I wish I had a notepad. "Do you ever attempt to talk to them?"
"Yes..." He started, "But they only give me short answers or don't answer me at all."
"Do you think they're mad at you?"
"Yes."
"Why is that?" I asked and he sat there looking at me, his eyes started to water.
"I-I'm not sure... "
"Maybe you should ask them."
"Yeah... " then he glanced at his watch. "Wow, I'd better get home. Do you need a ride?"
"No, my house is just around the corner from here."
"Oh, okay...well Veronica, this was interesting. We need to do it again."
"Yeah."
"Are you working at Rudy's tomorrow?" he asked.
"Yeah 7 to 2," I groaned.
"Okay, maybe I'll come by."
"Cool," I said and then he left. I stayed to finish my coffee however. Wow. I had just had coffee with Billie Joe Armstrong. Wow. He talked to me. Wow. I thanked my waitress and headed home.
"Milo!" I called setting my keys on the kitchen counter. Sure enough, my purebred Russian Blue kitten came sliding into the room crashing into my foot. I picked him up and cuddled him.
"How was my little prince today?" He meowed in response.
"I had the best day ever!" I told him and he looked at me.
"Okay, okay, it wasn't as good as when daddy gave you to me for Christmas." And he continued purring. I took him into my bedroom and told him about Billie while I got ready for my night classes. He listened intently on my pillow while grooming his face with his paw.
"Yep," I replied.
