J.A.R., chapter 10
Jason drove Mike over to Ollie's place early that morning. Mike was wearing Jason's clothes so the hoodie that he had been given went down to his knees as he carried the wieght on his legs which was being pushed down by the denim jeans. Jason pulled up to the front of the house, looking over at Mike; he could tell that the kid seemed a bit nervous. He reached across and unlocked the door, pushing it open so the teen could get out.
Mike looked back as the Jason got out of the car, wrapping an arm around the his small frame. Knocking on the door lightly, Jason removed his arm and waited along side Mike.
Ollie opened up and smiled as she saw the two standing there, "Thank you for bringing him over, I hope you two had a nice time."
Jason nodded and stepped back so he could get to his car.
Ollie opened the door wider so Mike would get in, slowly and causiously he shuffled back into the house that he considered "home." He heard Ollie sigh behind him, and that alone made him wince; he knew he was going to get "the talk."
Even though Ollie wasn't Mike's mom, she still acted like it. Most of the time it was fine, but he didn't like getting talked down on.
Ollie cleared her throat, "Why don't we go into the kitchen? We can talk there..." Mike nodded and followed behind her like a lost puppy. She sat down, but not without grabbing her favorite "wake-me-up" coffee.
Running her finger on the top of the mug, she looked up at Mike. "Is there something that you'd like to tell me? If not, I'll just skip to the easy part...why do you want to find your biological parents?"
Mike froze, staring at the finger lightly dragging its way around the curves of the blue cup. "I...I...I don't know really...I wanted to see them, but to be completely honest, all I want is to know if they really don't want to be found...I promise I'll leave them alone forever, but I need to hear that...it's all I need." It was obvious Mike was rambling, nerves must have got the best of him.
Ollie reached across the table, resting her hand on Mike's arm, allowing him to stop. Mike gulped, tears seemed to be dangerously close from making there target. "It's okay...Jason, Billie, Allen, me, pfft, everyone will help you! I promise, okay? It will get better...and if you fall and fall hard, we'll be here to pick you up again...because that's what a family does."
Mike bit his lip, still trying to prevent his worst enemy, his emotions, from letting loose, "Thank you...I...I mean it, I'll do better."
Ollie smiled warmly, "Good! Because you are so grounded!" She playfully watched as Mike's shoulders slumped, giving the puppy eyes. "I don't think so, not after all that you have put me through in less than a week!" Mike groaned and let his head rest on the table. "You have about fifteen minutes before you have to start getting ready for school, wanna sleep or just hang around?"
Shrugging, Mike went up to his room and fell on the bed, thinking. What he was thinking about could be the downfall of his day...what was his teacher going to do? He groaned and buried his head into the pillow. Life of a teenage outcast.
