Dawn to Dusk: A New Beginning, chapter 3

"What about CVI?"Gerard asked.
"They're an evil company, I'm sure you know. They'll kill anyone, basically. They'll search and search until they find you; and when they do, they have no mercy. Off goes your head. Boom. You're lying on the floor, dead. Why do you think they're called CVI? They don't care about you, or me, or anyone."Jara explained.
"I know all this, why are you telling me this again?"He asked.
"Because you and me have one thing in common. We're do good, yet we're evil. We're both vampires."
"But why are you telling me all this stuff?"
"I need your help."
There was silence, then Gerard began. "Why me?"
"You're the only one left in the city that CVI hasn't killed. You and me are the only ones. Even my closet friend I had, and boyfriend, although he was skilled at what he did, was killed." A single tear formed on Jara's cheek, running down like a stream. "But that was then, and this is now."She wiped the tear with the sleeve of her jacket."So, are you in?"
"I'm not sure. I just met you."Gerard said.
"Well, I guess I'll be leaving then. Um, in case you change your mind, call me." She threw him a small folded up piece of paper scribbled on with her number. "I'll be leaving now. See you later, or not."With that, she turned and walked away out the front door.
Gerard threw the note to the trash. "Yeah, right. Like I need help." He fell back asleep on the couch, thinking, dreaming of what could happen if what Jara said was all completely accurate.
He awoke, drenched in sweat, breathing heavily.
He walked over to the trash and and dug through it, looking for Jara's number. In an instant, he had changed his mind about not needing help to wanting help. He picked up the folded piece of paper that was now dirty with food stains and wet by old chunky milk. About to gag, he unfolded it and tried to read the smeared ink number. He picked up the phone and dialed the number. It rang a few times, then Jara answered it. He hung up. He couldn't do it. Gerard went to hang the phone back up, before it rang. It lay in his hands, ringing. He let it ring 3 times, then answered.
He took a deep breath, "Hello?"Gerard gulped.
"Gerard? It's me Jara. I star 69-ed you. You called, but hung up."
"Oh, hello. Yeah, I....uh, called."
"Did you change your mind?"Jara asked with enthusiasm and excitement in her voice.
"Umm, I'm not sure. I think you need my help more than I need your help though."
"Why is that?"she asked, scared.
"I don't know. I'm not sure."
"Uhh...Okay..."
"Yeah, well I have to go right now, it's getting dark and I should really be going to work soon."
"Yeah, me too. See you around later."
