In The End (An AFI Story), chapter 2
My mouth hung open. Wow. I just told Jade to shut up and go away. Smooth, Sfetie, smooth.
"Uh, Sfetie? Are you okay?" Jade asked.
"Yeah, yeah, I am! I'm sorry, Jade...usually my mom-"
"It's okay, I understand."
"So...why are you here anyway?" I asked.
"I'm here 'cause...Sfet, you won't believe this, I'm here 'cause we got a record deal," Jade said proudly.
"No way!" I said. A record deal? We actually have one! I knew we were getting somewhere!
"Yes! Adeline Records wants to sign us! We can go on tour for Orange Popsicle!"
"Jade, that's awesome!" I said. I ran up to him and hugged him, which I think took Jade by surprise.
"Also, I'm here cause you're 20 minutes late to band practice. So pick up your bass and get to Davey's, 'cause he is very pissed," Jade said. He looked a little mad.
"Oh, no! Jade, I'm really-"
"Just pick up your shit and go, Sfetie! What's wrong with you?" Jade yelled. He left the room. I don't know why, but that kinda hurt. Probably because it was Jade, AKA The One I Am Seriously Crushing On Big Time.
I turned off From First to Last, picked up Andy, my bass, and walked out of my room. I saw Jade, and my eyes fell to the floor. He was waiting for me. I pushed past him and went down the stairs. Tears slipped down my face.
'What's wrong with me? Why am I crying over a little thing like that? It's only Jade, God dammit!' I thought.
I slammed the door in Jade's face and kept walking to Davey's. I could tell Jade sensed I was mad at him. I don't even know why I'm mad in the first place! I finally got to Davey's and when he opened the door, his expression went from happy-to-see-who's-at-the-door to oh-it's-finally-the-bassist-that-should-have-been-here-by-now to holy-shit-why-are-you-crying?
"Sfetie? What's wrong?" he asked. I pushed past him and went to his bathroom. I rinsed my face and came back to the living room, where Jade and Davey were sitting. Jade began to stand up, but Davey pushed him down and stood up himself.
"Sfetie? Are you okay?" Davey said.
"Yes, I'm fine." I picked up Andy and went down to Davey's basement. I plugged in my bass and began to play the beginning chords to Hippopotamus. I started singing and Jade and Davey came down, got their stuff ready, and joined in. When we finished the song, I asked Davey if he knew the news.
"Yes, I do. But here's the thing: will you be allowed to come on tour with us?"
I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. I knew my parents weren't going to let me. I had to run away.
"Guys. The truth is, no. I would have to quit the band. But, I'm going, we're going to run away from this shithole we call home."
It got all quiet after that.
"Hell yeah!" Jade blurted out. We looked at him.
"Well, what about you, Davey?" I asked, grinning.
"Uh-huh. I agree. But where are we gonna go? We're broke, we have a gig in 2 days, but that won't skyrocket us to fame and glory! The only relative that lives here in New Jersey is Jade's grandfather!" Davey said, exasperated.
"Well, my gramps isn't that bad, I think he can keep a secret," Jade said hopefully.
"No," I said. "He cares about your parents. Your grandpa would tell. So that basically brings us back to square one."
I thought for a second. My Aunt Tatilia did say she was coming back to America...
