Will Little Armstrong The Second Pull Through?, chapter 1
I have just arrived here in Oakland, California. I have also just realised I am homeless. Great!
I wander round for a bit, thinking how nice it would be if I was to bump into one of Green Day or their families...
Night fell and all the dingy motels were far too expensive. $65.00 per night. Jeez! So I found a nice park next to a big urbanization of houses. I slept on a bench using my suitcase as a makeshift pillow. I eventually drift off thinking it was a mistake me coming here and I should have stayed at home in Catania, Sicily where my family and I originally come from. Contradicting myself I thought how great it is that I have a new start here in America.
I woke the next morning absolutely frozen solid. It was 6 in the morning according to my watch on my left wrist. To early for me usually but a park bench isn't the sort of place where you would have a lie in.
I'd been sleeping rough for the past week or so now and I was beginning to get dizzy spells from the lack of food and water. One afternoon I was happily ambling along a pleasant street in the heart of the urbanization. I passed this medium sized yellow house with ivy twining round the pillars that supported the roof over the porch. I immediately recognized this house to be the Armstrong Residence. Just then one of my dizzy spells followed the amazement and I passed out on their front lawn!
"Mummy, MUMMY, and COME QUICK SOMEONE HAS PASSED OUT ON OUR FRONT LAWN."
I opened my eyes to find none other than Billie Joe, Joey and a pregnant Adrienne all staring at me.
"oh my god, I'm so sorry," I mumbled, embarrassed.
"No problem," Adrienne said, "now let's get you inside."
Billie Joe and Adie helped me up and in while Joey ran ahead to get me a glass of water.
*Later*
"So when is the baby due?" I asked.
"3 months today actually," Adrienne replied, looking at the calendar.
"She's been fainting too," Billie Joe chipped in, "I've been worried about her."
"It's nothing to worry about B.J," Adie said, looking rather pale and swaying ever so slightly.
"Oh God," Billie said nervously, "she's about to pass out again, third time this week."
"I'll run upstairs to get a cold flannel ready for her," I said.
"Thanks," Billie Joe said, "JOEY CAN YOU GO GET YOUR MUM SOME WATER TO DRINK.NOW PLEASE."
"YES DADDY," Joey shouted back.
*Later*
Adrienne was really hot and looked feverish. She kept slipping in and out of conciousness. We needed some help.
I dialled 112 for an ambulance. It was here in five minutes which surprised me.
They placed a still unconscious Adrienne onto their trolley and hooked her up to an Oxygen supply.
In the Hospital
Adie was whisked away by an eight strong medical team. Billie and I were told to it in the waiting area while the doctors examined Adrienne and found the cause of the regularly occurring passing out. It was hours before the Doctor came out to explain the problem and situation to us. He came up to us with a serious expression on his face. We both feared the worst. He explained to us that Adrienne had kept passing out because she was suffering with very high blood pressure. He said they will have to perform an Emergency Caesarean to prevent any more harm to Adrienne and her baby. Billie Joe went white.
"My baby and my wife," he mumbled." Will they survive?" he asked.
The doctor replied." The chances for your wife are okay but I'm afraid the chances for your little one are extremely small. In some cases they do pull through but will definitely be severely brain damaged."
I gave a small barely audible snort at this but Billie heard it. He asked me why I had snorted when the Doctor had gone.
"Well you know he said your child will be definitely severely brain damaged. That isn't true. I'm not brain damaged."
"I know you're not brain damaged and how do you know my child is not going to be brain damaged?"
"Because I wasn't brain damaged. I was born 3 months premature just like your child is going to be. I have pulled through. Your little one will be in hospital until Adrienne's proper due date and they will get the best care they can receive."
"Are you sure?" was Billie Joe's reply.
"I am absolutely positve," I assured him.
We were then invited to go and see how Adie was doing. We went into her room but she was out for the count. The doctor then said we could go and see Billie's new addition to the family.
We walked into the Special Baby Care Unit. There was one incubator in the far corner with "Armstrong" written on it and all other information. The doctor told us that Billie and Adrienne had had a little boy.
"A second boy I believe Mr Armstrong?" said the Doctor.
"That's right," Billie replied.
Billie's son was so small. He weighed one pound, fifteen ounces according to the chart above the incubator.
Billie was just about to say something when a loud BEEP filled the room. We looked round to see where it had come from when about ten Doctors and Nurses came rushing to the incubator we were stood in front of.
A flat line crept across the monitor and Billie went white...
