Girl With Five Colors In Her Hair, chapter 1

She had been my best friend ever since sixth grade. I was new in America, along with my other three friends, Danny, Dougie, and Harry, and she was pretty much the only girl to talk to us. We connected easily, talking about the books and bands we liked, and we'd stuck together.

I guess I should explain myself before I start with the story of the girl who changed my life forever. Well, I'm five foot ten, I have brown eyes, blonde choppy hair, I'm skinny, but not to an extreme, I play the guitar, I sing, and I can play the drums. So...back to the story.

Jessie and I have been inseparable ever since our first concert together, which was The Clash. I don't know why, it just happened. We went to the concert, just the two of us, and then we became even closer. It's still a mystery to everybody who knew us back then.

I was making myself miserable as I walked the airport with Jessie by my side. The guys and I were about to go on tour, even at eighteen, while Jessie was seventeen. The tour was going to be six months and in that time, Jessie would be going to school while I played the same songs over and over again every night. This would be the first time that I leave Jessie behind for anything.

"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I think this silence is too loud," Jessie commented as we waited for the line to skim down for the metal detectors. She was right. That's why I was having a hard time forgetting that she wasn't going to be with me for once in my life; we were all too silent.

"I agree," Harry said, smiling weakly. Usually he was one to make a joke when there was silence, but I guess he noticed that I was too silent for jokes. "Come on, guys, let's leave these two alone for a while." Danny, Dougie, and Harry stepped towards the line and left Jessie and me to say goodbye.

"So...let's not say goodbye, okay," Jessie said, looking up at me. I nodded and she pounced on me, her nose going into my neck. She held me tightly around the neck as I held her close to me.

"This is the first time you won't be with me," I muttered, pressing my nose into her blonde hair.

"I know," she said. She sniffled and I realized that she was crying. I pulled back from our hug and she stared at me with those sad blue eyes. Frowning, I rubbed my thumb across her cheek and wiped a tear away. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to cry like this. I'm probably making it worse for you."

"Yeah, just a little," I admitted, even though it was convincing me that I shouldn't leave at all. She gave me a skeptical look and I smiled wistfully. "Okay, you're making it way worse, but just think, Jess, in six months we'll be together again."

"I know," she sighed. "But the longest we've ever been away from each other was eight hours, and not even that because we usually sleep over at each other's houses every single night. It's going to be hard without you there to comfort me during those bad days at school."

"Here," I said, taking off my pick necklace that I always wore around my neck. She stared at me as I put it around her neck and then she shook her head, about to take it off.

"No, Tom, this is yours," she said, lifting the chain. I grabbed her hands and put them around my neck.

"Jessie, I want you to keep that until I get back," I said. "It's so you'll think of me when I'm gone." She wiped at the tears starting to form again in her eyes and I pulled her closer to hug her.

"I love you, Tom," she mumbled against my cheek as she kissed it.

"Love you too, Jessie," I said, kissing her forehead and then her cheek. "I'll see you later, right?"

"Call me," she said hopefully.

"Everyday," I said, smiling. She squeezed me again and then she was gone, the girl with five colors in her hair, my life.
