The Unknown, chapter 1

This time, he wouldn't pull away. He could feel the need in her embrace. She was clinging to him as if he was the only thing keeping her sane. If he let go, backed away, not only would she crumble to the ground, not only would she collapse, but mentally she would fall apart.

He was her anchor right now, he was the one holding her together. She began to sing softly into his shoulder and he stood rooted to the spot, confused and unable to move.

I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams-

As the first heartbreaking sobs burst through, her whole body rocked with the pain she felt. He slowly lifted his arm cautiously and pulled her close. He let her body melt into his with uncertainty. Yet her soft voice still rang through the silence.

-Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk...

She couldn't finish the sentence. Her breath was hitched in her mouth and she tried in vain to swallow the ever present lump in her throat. He opened his eyes nervously and looked down at her gingerly. He could still feel her sobs, coming from deep within her soul, rimmed with mystery; he'll never understand her. But he saw this as the right time to speak, to add what he had to say:

Alone?

She paused briefly for a moment. Looking up into his face. She used every ounce of strength she had to gulp back the tears. They couldn't talk with sentences, they couldn't carry a conversation in person, couldn't even maintain eye contact, but they could stand, united as one by the unknown. And for the first time, they spoke together, in song.

My shadow's only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'till then I walk alone

They stopped in a comfortable silence and he still held her in his arms, afraid of what might happen to her if he let go. She looked down and breathed in his scent, she had longed to be close to him for a lifetime, yet as they stand now, united, they are still, miles apart. He kissed the top of her head in means of comfort and rested his forehead where his lips had previously been and they stood enveloped in each other, for the first time, together, yet both so alone.
