She had kept the windows locked ever since she had moved into the shabby flat on the border of the smog. She kept the doors double-locked when she was inside, and when the sun went down, she slid a heavy bolt across the warped wood. Precautions such as this were always taken in this area so close to the danger zone. But she had no way out, and it was the best she could afford; the attacks were less often nowadays.

I squeezed cheap toothpaste onto the brush, and placed it into my mouth. The taste was of rancid meat, and it quickly foamed into an unpleasant froth on my tongue. The flavor was typical in the area around here, as escapees from inside the smog usually came to this neighborhood. Not being able to stray away from their previous home, they attempted a new life here. They needed supplies like this to survive in the real world. Disgusted, I ducked and spat the remaining paste into the sink, and pushed the toothbrush onto the edge.
I stared at my tired reflection, and after a minute the toothbrush rolled over and dropped onto the floor. I frowned and watched the place where it had been. The grubby surface was ridged, and the brush had been sitting within a deep groove. Strange, I thought. I bent down as the toothbrush knocked with a hollow thunk against the skirting board. Standing up, I glanced back at the mirror.
I wish I hadn't.

Standing, less than a foot behind me was a deathly pale face, framed with snagged black hood. The eyes were a startling red, and had an expression of a hungry predator. Whereas the rest of the face was completely calm. Unreadable. Unpredictable. But I knew what would happen to me.
I didn't react as he lowered his head with a faint satisfied sneer to my neck. I caught sight of an oversized sharpened canine. It wasn't painful. A sudden heat seeped down my neck and into my shirt, staining it a deep red. The heat went instantly, and I felt a sensation of having a bucket of cold water poured over my scalp. My eyes flickered, and I caught sight of myself in the mirror. As the icy numbness ran down my head, I saw my hair fade into greasy midnight. The cold flowed down my face, and my pale spectral skin matched the man's behind me. Without warning, my eyes burned, and I screwed them shut. But, in a second they had snapped open again, forcing me to stare at my transformation. My eyes were now bloodshot and ruby-red. My outfit was replaced by torn floor-length leather coat, with a jagged collar and slashed cuffs.
I looked like a replica of the man who had entered my flat. The vampire who had entered my flat. He had been from the smog, and I was fated to the same life as his. Searching at night, for a suitable human victim, of whose blood I would drink, and then alter to match me. I was not surprised that I had been chosen. I lived in one of most dangerous areas, but I was one of few people willing to take a risk. Now I knew how risky I had been. Stumbling and dizzy, I moved over to the window and threw open the curtains. I expected to see glass. I staggered back. Warped and rotten boards had been nailed up to the window frame, blocking light into the room. Only a tiny shaft of light had crept through from a flickering streetlight. It shone onto my hand, which instantly burned. I snatched it out of the way, and examined the scorch mark it had left. I swung my head around and looked and the man sitting in the corner of the room. He still said nothing, only raised his eyebrows in a tiny movement. His expression was a self-satisfied way of saying "You see what happens with the sunlight? Don't do it again."

I had fallen asleep. I had no idea how I managed to be relaxed enough to sleep for that amount of time. Was I in shock? Was I scared and had nothing to live for? I should have been. But now I was hungry and craving something I'd never even tasted before. I was out of my own control. I simply stood up straight and slowly turned. I gave the vampire in my room an arrogant smirk, baring my new razor-sharp teeth.
