A Beginning Never Forgotten, chapter 2

I slowly walked down the sidewalk toward the phone booth. On the bench next to the booth, there was a guy who looked about 20. He had a shock of dark brown hair on his head and equally shocking dark brown eyes. As I walked up to the booth, his head head turned and he examined his shoelaces.

I picked up the phone book and started flipping through the pages looking for "mechanic." Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the guy on the bench looking at me.

"Can I help you?" I asked him.

"I could ask you the same. Do need help finding something?" As he said this, he shook his head and his hair moved into his face. I hate to admit it, but he didn't look all that bad. Okay, snap out of it, I told myself. Now was not the time to look for a relationship.

"Unless you know a mechanic's number by heart, then no, you can't help me."

"Well, you are in luck. My uncle just happens to work at an auto shop near by. But may I ask to why you need a mechanic?" at this last part he put on a faux English accent, making me giggle.

"See that van over there in the 7-11 parking lot? Yeah, it belongs to my friend, Catie. She's the one rolling around on the ground laughing. The two dumb asses that are fighting with drumsticks are Morgan and Jessica. The van broke down, so here I am looking for a phone number."

"You look like you are in a hurry."

"I have to do some cramming for a test tomorrow."

"You're in college?"

"Yeah. Are you?"

"I was, but it was to hard. Either that or I was too lazy. I haven't decided which excuse I like better."

"I would go with the lazy. By the way, what's your name?" I asked. This guy was starting to grow on me. But hey, I wasn't complaining.

"I'm Matt. You?"

"My names Lizz. Nice to meet you Matt."

"Dido. So, why are you four lovely ladies traveling in an old van at," he glanced at his watch, "7:30?"

"Well, we just finished up a show."

"A show?"

"We're in a band and we had a gig at the club down the street."

"What kind of music do you play?"

"Punk, mostly"

"That is interesting... "

"How so?"

"Well," he started. "My friend Brett is having a party, and the band he had scheduled to play somehow, got a better paying gig that same night, and he can't find a good band to replace them."

"That is very interesting." I hoped he was getting at something here. We really needed some extra cash.

"I just had a crazy revelation! How about, your band plays for my buddy Brett, and I'll see if I can get you guys to play at the party!"

"That would be awesome if you could do that! But, what day is the party?"

"The Thursday of next week."

"We should be available."

"That's great."

"Yeah. Well, how about I get that mechanic's number off you?"

"Oh, yeah! I almost forgot. Here," he got out a piece of paper and wrote down two numbers. Next to one of the numbers, it said Matt. He handed me the piece of paper.

"The first number is for the mechanic. The other one is mine."

"Obviously."

"Um... yeah. Feel free to call me any time, or when ever you guys are free for Brett to come listen to ya. So, I'll be going now."

"Bye!" I said as he got up and walked away.

I called the auto shop and they said they would send someone out right away. I thanked them and hung up. I started walking back to the van, thinking over my schedule to see what the best time for us to see Brett would be.
"Probably Sunday," I said to myself.

"Huh? What was that?" Catie said.

Okay let me tell you about Catie. She is 5'5, has shoulder length brown hair with red streaks and has earrings up and down both ears. She also has a ring in her lip.

She is only two days younger than me and has been my best friend since we were 9 years old

"Oh nuthin.' I just probably got us a gig for Thursday. And I just met a really nice guy."

"Really? That would explain why you are smiling."

"Shut up Catie. You know too much about me for my own good."

"Yeah, I know," She gloated. "When is the mechanic going to be here?"

"In a few minutes."

"That's good."

"Yeah," I said.

We both leaned up against the van and watched the conclusion of the dramatic sword fight, Morgan won.
