Unicorns of Oakland (Brought to you by: Cousins Grimm), chapter 1
Tally was born in Ukraine in 1972. She had long, dirty blond hair and underneath was black. She attended school, like others her age. But one year, when she was 16, was different. She moved to Oakland, California. Billie Joe Armstrong, a punk with blue hair, didn't particularly greet new comers. Neither did his buddies. Tally could speak English well, but with a thick accent. Not good.
*Tally's Point of View*
Dobrevetchert, that means hello in Ukrainian. My name is Tally Koach. It's pronounced (coa-tch) but people call me couch. I hate that. I just moved to America, I am very happy. It's beautiful here. I will start school tomorrow; I hope I will have friends. This is what happened to me many years ago when I was 16. Here we go.
I walked down my street, just walking and looking around my new home. It was lovely. I must have walked 2 hours because I didn't know where I was anymore. I needed directions. Down the street there was a boy with blue hair smoking.
I walked up to him and asked, "'Ello, do you know where Atlanta Street is?"
He looked me over and narrowed his eyes. "I do. Who wants to know?"
"I do, it's where I live, I just moved here from Ukraine. My name is Talliea Koach, but you can call me Tally," I smiled up at him.
"Well Tally, follow me, and I will show you where to go." His voice was filled with sarcasm. I couldn't pick that up because I didn't know what sarcasm was then.
We walked a long ways; I didn't recognize anything. We passed street after street. Sunchaser Street, Elidor Road, Alida Boulevard.
"Why are these roads named like this?" I asked.
He stopped and pulled another joint from his pocket and lit it up. "There used to be unicorns here," he said.
"What's a unicorn?" I asked.
He glared at me. "Horse with horn on head, you understand me?" said the boy. I nodded. "What is your name?"
He started walking again. "Billie Joe."
This Billie Joe boy seemed nice; we could be friends. He led me to Atlanta Street and walked me to my house.
"Thank you for bringing me back," I said.
"Ya, whatever." Billie walked down the road from which we came and disappeared from sight. Maybe Billie Joe could help me make friends? That would be nice.
*NEXT DAY*
My clock went off at 4 A.M. I still wasn't used to the time change. I looked outside, but all I could see was a pink horse eating our lawn. I gasped. It looked up and was chewing. It had a silver horn in the middle of its forehead. It was a unicorn!
I stepped quietly downstairs and outside. It was dark, but I could see the beautiful animal still eating. I sat on the front steps, watching it. Light started to peek over the hills. The unicorn's horn shown and its coat glowed in the sun. I could hear a car coming, so did the unicorn because it turned a huge bound, and it galloped away with me staring after it. I will never forget that moment; maybe Billie could tell me more about these unicorns.
They seemed special. I'm sure they are, they're amazing!
