Aaron didn't open his eyes immediately when he woke up. He lay there, slowly taking in the sound of traffic in the distance and the birds singing around him. A cold breeze whipped by and he drew the blanket more tightly around him. Confusedly, he opened his eyes ; where the hell had the blanket come from? He blinked a few times in the bright winter sunshine. Another breeze rushed past, causing him to shiver. Suddenly, someone whispered into his ear,
"Sleep well?"
The voice made him jump to his feet in alarm.
"Fuck..." he stammered, his grey-green eyes widened in alarm. He recognised the guy from the night before standing behind him. "Fuck man, don't do that."
"Sorry, couldn't resist." Aaron noticed, to his annoyance, that he was smirking.
"What the hell are you doing here anyway?"
"You think I was gonna leave you out here by yourself?"
"Yeah..." he muttered under his breath.
"Well you must be crazy. Any idea how cold it gets at night this time of year? You woulda frozen to death or something. You didn't even have a coat."
"I had a blanket..." he trailed off as he realised how stupid that sounded. "Thanks," he offered meekly.
A smile broke across the guy's face for the first time since they had met.
"It's no problem. I'm Mike," he said, offering his hand.
"Aaron." He shook his hand, somewhat reluctantly. Trust wasn't a quality he possessed. But on the other hand if it wasn't for that guy...
"Hey," Mike broke his line of thought.
"Hmmm?"
"You go to school?"
"Shit!" he remembered with a start.
"I guess that's a yes then," he laughed. "I got a van, you want a ride?"
"Uh, yeah, thanks." He wasn't used to people being this kind to him. Mike seemed nice and all, but he hadn't known him long enough to be sure. And after all, he was just some randomer...
"C'mon then."
Mike led Aaron to a battered old van.
"Nice," he remarked. Then he remembered he was giving him a ride. "Sorry..."
"It's okay," he said, patting the van. "It's a piece of shit, I know."
They drove in silence after Aaron had told Mike where his school was. Not an awkward silence, the kind when everyone has said everything that needs to be said.
"Shit, you go to private school?" Mike asked him as he pulled up at the gate.
"Yeah," he answered in a voice that indicated he didn't want to talk about it.
"OK, well good luck kid." Seeing the look on his face he added, "Sorry, I meant, good luck Aaron."
"Thanks man. I just..."
"It was nothing dude."
"Well, thanks anyway." He slid out of the car and began to shuffle up the path towards the school.
