Not A Lightyear Away, chapter 3

I tried to catch my breath, but I couldn't. I blinked a few times, trying to believe the image that was displayed before my eyes. Lying on the floor, was a cold, limp, yet familiar body.
"Dad?" I questioned through tear filled eyes. "What's going on?" I asked, shifting my attention to Rae.
She glanced around the room with a blank expression. "I don't know," she shot at me. I was surprised at her response. She almost seemed defensive, but I just shook it off. She was probably just upset. I knew I was.
Billie dropped down beside me and held me in his arms. I cried, out of extreme fear and sadness. Why was my dad here? It didn't make sense- the pieces didn't fit.
"What should I do?" I asked Billie, gasping for breath.
"We have to take him somewhere- tell somebody. We can't just leave him here," Billie told me, glancing over from me to Rae. He brushed my tears away with his thumbs. "I'm so sorry."
"Rae, what is Dad doing in your room?" I asked again, still confused as to of why she was being so defensive.
"I told you already, I don't fucking know!" she screamed at me, tears steadily flowing down her face.
"God Rae, chill out. I mean, I know you're upset, but seriously. You need to calm down," I told her, lowering my voice.
"Sorry," she muttered below her breath.
I looked over at her, then back at Billie. I gave him a questioning look. Why was Rae acting like this? Why was my dad in her room, and why was she kicked out of her friend's house?
I glanced back over at Billie for comfort, and saw him eyeing something in the corner of the room. It was a black, empty trash bag.
"What the fuck is that?" Billie asked Rae, starting to get angry.
"Umm, what are you talking about?" she asked, shifting her weight from one leg to the other.
Billie walked over to the other side of the room and picked up the bag. It was soaking wet with rain and blood. "What is this?" he asked, infuriated. I was surprised by his anger, I didn't know he was going to be so harsh.
"It's a trash bag," she answered rudely. I was ready to strangle her- she had no reason to act this way towards Billie and I.
"Rae, what the hell-" I was cut off by the sound of the door slamming loudly behind Rae, as she ran out the house.
"Erica, you don't think Rae did this, do you?" Billie questioned, rubbing his temples.
"You know what? If she did, she's fucking going to jail. And I will gladly escort her," I replied, out of extreme anger.
"Come on now, don't say that," he said, embracing me." she must have had a good reason to do something like this."
"It better be good."

I held the phone away from my ear, just for a moment though. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"She made me do it, Erica. I couldn't help it. She said she'd kill me if I didn't," Rae sobbed.
"Why didn't you just say that then? And why did you have him with you still?" I asked her, trying my best to make sense out of the situation.
"She made me keep him with me. She said that if someone found him they'd know who killed him," she answered, her voice still quivering.
"Look, I have to go. I'll talk to you later," I said, hanging up the phone. I couldn't stand hearing her say those things. My little sister murdered our father. And my mom made her do it.
I sat down on the floor of my own room, and held my head in my hands. I really couldn't believe this at all. I hated my mom, I hated her so fucking much. I wanted to kill her. I wanted her dead.
"Whats going on?" Billie asked me, sitting down beside me, like he had done countless times in the past.
"Rae killed Dad," I cried into his arms.
"You have got to be kidding me," he sighed, running a hand through his thick black hair.
"My mom forced her to. My mom got a hold of her one day after school. She escaped, Billie. She threatened to kill Rae if she didn't klil him. She hated how we loved him more." I spilled the entire story to him. It didn't make too much sense though, and Billie asked me to repeat parts of it because I was gasping for breath the entire time.
"Holy shit, Erica," was all he said when I was finished. He held me in his arms once again, pulling our bodies closer together. I rested my head on his chest, and closed my eyes. Billie took my hands- they were shaking increadibly.
"Look, you need to relax, it'll be ok," he said, sounding worried. I couldn't calm down though- no matter how hard I tried. All I could think about was my mom. How could she do this?
I grinded my teeth back and forth. I was so pissed off, yet extremely upset at the same time. Not a very good combination. My face began to turn a lovely shade of red, and I felt my body slowly becoming numb. My vison became blurry, as I fell backwards to the ground. I couldn't move, I could barely breathe.
"Oh my god, are you alright?" Billie asked, shaking me. I slowly opened my eyes, and blinked a few times. I looked up and saw Billie hovering over me, his hands on my shoulders.
"Ow," I muttered, rubbing my head, It was throbbing uncontrollably. I looked up at Billie once again. "I'm ok," I managed to say.
"Thank god," he replied, giving me his hand, as he helped me off the floor.

Billie, Rae and I walked out of the large building, starting to become happier. We set a court date to press charges against my mom for abuse and her escape from jail. The court date was the next week, so we still had time to prepare.
When the court date finally came, I was excited and anxious at the same time. I was scared to have to see my mother again. I hadn't seen her in 3 years, and I was afraid she was going to hurt me, just like she hurt Rae.
We all walked into the court room together. The whole procedure was extremely boring, but I knew it would be worth it in the end.
I waited for 2 hours, until the end of the interrogations. Finally, the judge banged the mallot against the table.
"We find this case in favor of...."
