Sweat dripped down my face, my ears pulsed, my heart quickened. I was scared. More scared than I had ever been in my life. I was scared of that thing. That thing that followed me wherever I went, like a shadow, retracing every footstep, every move. There was no where to hide. Every corner, crevasse and crack was occupied. The heavy footsteps clumped behind me, growing louder and louder every second. Its wheezing, putrid breath running down my neck, chains rattled with the sluggish motion this beast carried.

I had to think fast, to get away from this, get away from everything before I became engulfed by the horror that lingered behind me. My eyes darted back and forth in search of shelter, a hiding place, ANYTHING to get out of this nightmare. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a large, hollow tree trunk, rotten from the years of lying on the mossy forest floor. Abandoned. Just like me. I dived into the empty darkness and lay still. Just as still as the hollow vessel that hid me. I lay in wait.

Minutes passed. Long, droning minutes that felt like hours. Inside the tree trunk it was damp, dark, smelt of mildew and was difficult to breathe. It wasn't pleasant, but was the best atmosphere I had experienced so far. It was safe. I could still feel the creature's footsteps vibrating through the ground. It dragged its feet as it circled my alcove. Suddenly, the vibrations stopped. I felt a large hand hit the roof of the trunk. The other hairy, gangrene ridden hand began reaching into the womb of the trunk; towards me. I clamped my eyes shut and covered my ears.

"That's it," I thought. "This is it."

Nothing happened.

Then, the footsteps began again, but this time they were growing quieter. I opened one small eye and squinted. The hand had gone. I breathed a sigh of relief. It must've gone away, for whatever reason, I don't know. I clambered out of the tree and stumbled. Oxygen filled my lungs, I could breath again. I rose from the muddy patch and dusted myself down.

"I've got to get out of here, I've got to escape."

I turned on my heel to begin back where towards where I came from. I stopped. I looked up past the hairy, muddy legs, past the gangrene ridden hands, past the huge, bulging torso and right into its blood-shot eyes.
