An Alchemist's Life For Me, chapter 2
The Next Morning
I was awoken from a strange dream the next morning by Rose's baby demanding food. I groaned and rolled onto my back trying desperately to remember most of the details of the dream. It was about as possible as trying to hold water in my cupped hands. The details of the dream had begun trickling away and I knew I wouldn't be able to make sense of what I could remember.
I pushed myself up and checked the clock. 9am. God, that baby was like an alarm clock. Every morning at 9am without fail, he cried. I listened to his shrieks, which were beginning to quieten down as someone fed him. Eventually it stopped entirely.
I pushed myself out of bed and made to rub my neck with my right hand. It was then that I remembered that Winry was fixing it. I looked at the metal stump, almost certain that I could still move my fingers even though they weren't there. Winry and Pinako said that it was called "Phantom Limb". Where you could feel limbs that were no longer there. I sighed and dressed myself, taking my time due to the fact that I was missing a hand, and then wandered to the kitchen.
"Hey, Ed," I mumbled as he cradled Rose's baby. "Isn't the baby Rose's job?" I aske, sitting down at the kitchen table." He shrugged.
"If I hadn't screwed up big time in Liore, she wouldn't have him. It's only fair that I help out with him." I watched him as he fed the baby. The expression on his face was so cute. It was obvious he didn't know what the hell he was doing. The baby started fussing and pushing the bottle away. "Eat it...." he mumbled half to himself, half to the baby. I sighed and took the baby from him.
"He's full, Ed," I held it and tapped it's back with my left hand. The baby burped and then settled down in my arms to sleep again. Ed sat next to me looking exhausted.
"What's up, Fullmetal?"
"The sky..." he mumbled, smiling slightly. I raised my eyebrow at him.
"You don't say. Seriously, Ed. What's bothering you?" He looked down at the table. Then back at me.
"I'm just really tired. I love Rose and the baby... but... It's just so tiring." Because I couldn't hug him while holding the baby, I kissed his check softly.
"Rose didn't ask you to take up the "Father" role. She appreciates it, but you're still only 17."
"So's Rose," he interrupted.
"I know. But she's a girl. And she has a helluva lot of maternal instinct. You don't need to do everything for her. Me and Al wanna help you, but you don't let us." He looked down again. "Let us in and everything'll get easier. I promise." He smiled and looked back at me.
"Thanks." I rocked the baby slightly.
"I dunno about you, but I could use a brisk morning walk. And I'm pretty sure you'll benefit from a little visit to your mom." His smile faded. I sighed. "What's wrong now?"
"I haven't been to visit her grave since.....Since Sloth wore mom's face....."
A few years ago Ed had killed a homonculs he had made when he attempted to bring his mother back from the dead. It had been called Sloth and it had used Ed's mother's (Trisha Elric's) face to try to make Ed hesitate against killing her. It had worked on Al. But Ed had somehow managed to bring himself to kill her.
"You didn't kill your mom. You took care of a homonculus."
"I know.....It's just......I've tried to go to her grave.....but I keep seeing Sloth....how her face looked when I killed her." A small tear fell down his cheek. I balanced the baby and wiped the tear away with my left thumb.
"Wanna just try to go down there?" He nodded.
"I guess."
