It was Joey Armstrong's first full day as a student at the University of Berkley. His parents had been so happy when he had told them that he been accepted into the premed-school programme. His mum had cooed over him and told everyone she met that her son was going to be a doctor. But that was a long way off - first he had to get through his very first lecture in Biological Science and more importantly, he had to find his way there before the lesson began in just under five minutes.
He wandered down an unfamiliar corridor full of unfamiliar people, many of them looking just as lost and anxious as he was. Eventually he found the right place and took a seat near to the front. Gazing round the classroom that was more like a cinema theatre, Joey felt a rush of excitement. It was finally real. All his hard work and studying had paid off - he was at one of the top schools in the country, especially for the sciences, if he graduated with first class houners he would get into med school easily. Joey's attention returned to the front of the room as the professor entered and began his introductions.
"My name is Dick Wagman... " Joey couldn't help but giggle and then immediately felt embarrassed, he was a university student now and he should not be acting so immature. "... I'm the first lecturer for this class, for the first, five-week semester only. There are about 550 students enrolled but this is probably the last time I'll see all of you, cause that's what happens, people stop showing up to lectures. That's the easiest way to fall behind so it really is in your best interest to attend... "
Joey's attention was already begging to drift but he had heard it all before. Plus the course overview was in the handout so he wasn't really missing anything. It was of far greater interest to study his fellow students. He looked at the girl that was sitting to his left. It seemed as though she too had lost interest in what Dick Wagman had to say. She was tracing round the picture on the front cover of her textbook and was paying no attention to the world around her. She had black hair that was tied neatly into a ponytail and Joey thought that she was extremely pretty. Her eyes were what he noticed the most; at first look they appeared green but then faded into a grey-blue colour. They were alive and dancing, they sparked and were full of personality. Her attention diverted back to the lecturer but Joey continued to be captivated by her. Someone behind him sneezed and he was woken from his daydream. He started to listen to what was being said and realised Wagman had begun his lesson and was talking about hydrophilic molecules. He frantically began to scribble notes, just as everyone else was doing and hoped that he hadn't missed too much.
Great start he thought to himself: day one and he was already begging to lag behind!
