Me, Mike, and Amnesia, chapter 15

*5 YEARS LATER*

The doorbell rang just as I was applying my last layer of lipstick.
"Great," I muttered. "Just a second!" I called out in the general direction of the door. I looked at myself in the mirror. Presentable, I thought to myself as I fluffed my hair one last time. I smiled quickly, then ran out of the bathroom down the stairs. I threw open the door to reveal Billie Joe and Adrienne.
"Ah!!!" I squealed, throwing my arms around Billie Joe. "If it isn't my favorite superfamous rock star!"
"Nice to see you too, Violet." came Billie Joe's muffled voice.
"And, of course, my favorite superfamous rock star's wife." I added, hugging Adrienne as well.
"Gee, thanks," she said sarcastically. I laughed, but I still couldn't believe that they were married. I had always kind of known that they would be together forever, but marriage just seemed so adult, for some reason. I chuckled. But who was I to talk?
"Oh my gosh!" I squeal. "So how is your beautiful little baby?" This was a more amazing thing than the fact that they were married; just the very idea that they had A CHILD kind of scared me. But there it was.
Adrienne smiled fondly. "Joey's not exactly a baby anymore, Violet. He's two. And he's doing really well. We dropped him off at his grandmother's for the night." She smiled at Billie Joe, who squeezed her shoulder affectionately. It occurred to me that five years ago this display of affection would have made me insanely jealous, wishing for a relationship of my own, but I didn't have to do that anymore.
"So I hear the tour went well." I begin. This part shocked me out of my mind. Billie had always talked about the band, he had always been interested in the band, but I'd never thought they'd actually make it. And I especially hadn't expected them to blow up in such a huge way the way they had. They had been on tour now for the past four months, which was why I'd invited them all over tonight for a sort of reunion dinner.
He nodded and smiled. "Yeah, Violet, it was... .amazing."
"Good, that's really... .good." Had we reached the awkward part of the conversation already? Luckily, I had something to fill it with as I craned my neck up the stairs.

"Tre should be down any minute." I smiled. Okay, so I'd married Tre. We'd been together for... five years I guess it was now. Right after Mike had recovered from his amnesia, I had started thinking, and I had started considering Tre as more than a friend, something I had never done before. Before long, I had found myself deeply and madly in love with him, something that was scary and exciting at the same time. I had been so scared to tell him, so scared he would reject me the way that I had done to him, but, obviously, he hadn't. I smiled distantly, remembering how thrilled he had been when I'd divulged my secret, how we'd kissed and kissed and kissed... .we couldn't keep our hands off of each other for the first few months, we'd been inseparable. It was as if we'd both been waiting our entire lives for it to happen, and when it had, we never wanted it to end. But that stage of our relationship eventually died, but by then we knew each other so well, we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. So we'd continued to date, we eventually moved in together, until he asked me to marry him three years ago. Of course I'd said yes, and we'd had the most beautiful wedding... .it had been amazing, one of the happiest days of my life. I sighed, happy in all my memories. But for now, I had invited my friends over for dinner, and Tre was nowhere to be seen.

"Actually, I'm going to go see what's taking him so long." I told Billie Joe and Adrienne. "There's beer and stuff in the fridge, you guys know where everything is, you've been here before."
They nodded, and I shot up the stairs to mine and Tre's bedroom. I opened the door to find Tre asleep on the bed. Oh, great, I thought. I crept up softly beside him and for a few seconds just watched him breathe. It was amazing how beautiful he looked when he was sleeping, and I didn't really want to wake him up, but I had to.
I paused, then jumped on his chest and said, "Tre, it's time to wake uuuuuuuuuup!"
He let out a high-pitched shriek. I laughed as I continued to lean on him.
"What in the hell's going on up there?!" came Billie Joe's voice from downstairs.
"We're fine!" I called back.
"Why did you have to DO that?" Tre wanted to know.
"Treeeeeeee. We invited people over for dinner, do you not remember this conversation? You are supposed to be getting ready, not sleeping."
"Oh yeah. No, I remember, I just... .forgot."
"That makes sense." I said sarcastically.
"Stop making fun of me and kiss me." Tre pulled me on top of him, and I giggled. He pressed his mouth against mine, and for a few moments I was lost in the kiss, until I remembered what I was there for.
"Mmmmmph." I mumbled against his lips. "Billie and Adrienne are downstairs. They're waiting, I have stuff to put in the oven."
"So?" he murmured back.
"So... .you have to get up, and get ready."
Tre stood up and held his arms out. "Who needs to get ready? I'm fine like this."
"Except... ." I wiped some of my lipstick off of the corner of his mouth, and smoothed his hair. "Perfect." I smiled. "Very sexy."
He grinned. "Not as sexy as you."
I laughed. "No, you're sexier."
"No, you are."
"Are you sure?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Okay, you're right, I'm the sexy one," he finished smugly.
"Ha, ha. Okay, can we go downstairs now?"
He thought for a moment. "No."
I shook my head. "Too bad." I left the room, and avoided Tre's hand, which grabbed for my arm.
"Hey!" came his voice from behind me, and I laughed and hurried down the stairs and burst into the kitchen. Tre ran after me and wrapped his arms around my waist. "I have you now!" he laughed evilly.

"Get a room." Billie Joe said dryly. His voice was muffled, as his head was stuck in the refrigerator. Adrienne stood behind him, trying to peer around him into the fridge.
"Violet, you said there was beer in here."
"There is. Did you look?" I wriggled out of Tre's grasp and joined them. I shoved them aside and pawed through the contents of the refrigerator. "Oh, no... .." I groaned. "Tonight was supposed to be perfect, and I forgot the damn beer."
"Will this work?" came a voice from the doorway. There stood Mike, holding up a six-pack and grinning.
"Mike!" I squealed and ran over to hug him. I sighed gratefully. "You saved the day. How did you know?"
"I didn't. I just keep this in my car for emergencies."
"Well, good. Because I'm fucking thirsty." Billie Joe came over and took one of the beers, and helped hand one to everyone.
"Anastacia, do you want one?" Mike turned to a girl standing behind him, a girl I hadn't noticed until now.
"Sure," she said shyly, and took one from Mike. I shot Mike a look, as if to say, Introduce us.
"Oh!" he recovered quickly. "Violet, this is Anastacia. And you already know Billie Joe, and Tre."
She waved at them. I smothered jealousy that she had probably seen them more recently than I had, and I was supposed to be their best friend, I was Tre's WIFE, for crying out loud.
"It's nice to meet you," I told her, then looked around the kitchen. "Okay... ..The box said to put it in the oven for... .twelve minutes, and then we can eat!"
"What are we having?" Mike asked.
"Uh... frozen pizza."
Tre snorted. "That's your giant gourmet dinner?" he asked incredulously.
I pretended to be offended. "Yes! Let's see you try to make dinner one night, big shot, and see what you make."
"Okay then, I will."
"Oh, I'm so sure."
Tre straightened up and tried to look important. "As my wife, you are supposed to make me three-course, delicious meals twenty-four seven, and never insult me, as you are doing now. Plus, you have to massage my feet whenever I want. And now is a good time." He held up his foot toward me.
"Not a chance." I crossed to the freezer and took out the pizza box.

"Preheat oven to 350... ." I muttered to myself as I read.
"Violet, I'm hungry," Billie Joe whined.
"Will you wait a damn minute!" I faked irritation. It occurred to me that this was the first time in months that I had seen my friends, and nothing at all had changed. They were all still the same people, really. Tre and I were married, Billie Joe had gotten married and had a kid, Mike seemed to be really enamored with this Anastacia girl. But we were still the same kids we'd always been, the ones that were friends to the end, the way we would always be. The future looked promising, to tell you the truth. I leaned against a counter and folded my arms, just watching everyone. They were all deep in conversation about something that was obviously hilarious, as they were all laughing hysterically, but I wasn't really listening, just thinking. I had known these people forever, and they were my favorite people in the entire world, and nothing would ever change that. Their company was something I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. And things would continue to change, we would continue to get older and hopefully wiser, but we would remain the same people. And nothing would ever alter our friendship.
"Violet, is the oven supposed to be leaking smoke like that?" Mike asked worriedly.
"Oh, shit!" I threw open the oven door, and was hit it in the face with a giant cloud of smoke. "Tre, get the fire extinguisher!"
I grabbed a towel and tried fanning the flames in the oven, and Adrienne did the same, but it really didn't do anything. Tre and Billie Joe ran over with the fire extinguisher and managed to get the white foam from it all over the floor and the counters and the oven and everyone standing in the kitchen. But finally the fire was out. They turned to look at me.
"Violet, what were you DOING?" Tre demanded.
"Uh... thinking about how much I love you guys?" Oddly, I was telling the truth.
Tre scoffed. "Yeah, right."
"Uh... sorry?"
Billie Joe sighed. "Everybody grab a towel, and we'll clean this up."
"Wait!" Tre grinned, an evil idea behind his eyes. "We can have some fun with this." He put some white foam on top of his head. "Okay... you guys... who am I?"
"I don't know," Adrienne replied. "Who are you, Tre?"
"I don't know either. I was hoping you could tell me."
I couldn't help but laugh.
