Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, chapter 15
"Hey," said a tired voice down the other end of the phone line. Jane smiled.
"Hi, you sound knackered."
"Yeah, I haven't slept in four days. It's a new record."
"You shouldn't be proud of that. Why haven't you slept?"
"Things on my mind I guess."
"Like... "
"Nah, doesn't matter."
"Well if it's stopping you from sleeping... "
"I miss you," he said abruptly.
"I miss you too."
"I've been writing lots."
"Really? Awesome. You'll have to play me a few tunes some time."
"Anytime babe."
"Why don't you go to sleep Bill? You sound completely dead."
"I feel completely dead," he replied giving a light chuckle. "Hey could you... no don't worry about it."
"What?"
"No don't worry, it's stupid."
"Nothing's stupid when it comes to you. Except that face you make when you're trying to be funny but you're actually not... "
"Hey!"
"Sorry. So what did you want?"
"Could you like talk to me until I fall asleep? You don't have to but it might help." Jane smiled slightly at how young he sounded.
"Why is it," she began totally brushing aside his question, "that you have this little thing you do when you're sad that makes me hug you at the most inconvenient times... like when you're about three thousand miles away for example?"
"I'm just adorable I guess. So will you talk to me?"
"You're actually asking that question? You think I wouldn't?" Jane could tell he was smiling down the other end of the phone.
"I love you." Jane smiled.
"I love you too," she replied.
"Tré shut up will you? He's sleeping!" Mike took the phone out of Billie Joe's hand and frowned when he saw that the call was still connected. That's gonna cost bomb... he thought as he held the phone up to his ear.
"Hey are you still awake?" Jane said.
"No he's out like a baby. That boring are you Jay?"
"No... he was just knackered... and I have a way with knackered people."
"That sounds incredibly kinky... "
"Get your mind out of the gutter! There's a name for people like you, you sick... pervert!" Jane said jokingly.
"I know. The name's Mike. But I'm beat so I'll speak to you another time ok?"
"Yeah ok, tell Billie I said bye."
"Will do. Sleep tight."
"You too. Bye Mike." Jane put down the phone and walked slowly up the stairs to bed.
She lay awake for hours and when the sun began to slowly rise, her eyes began drift shut and the last thoughts she had were of someone who was far away.
Too far away.

"Hey, do you guys feel like... I dunno... a bit iffy going down here?"
"Iffy? What the hell? You have been talking to Jane way too much man."
"Shut up Tré. It just feels weird going down here after everything that's happened... "
They walked along the dirt track uneasily. Mike tripped on a large rock lodged into the ground and swore loudly. He steadied himself on his feet again but before he caught up with the other two he looked over his shoulder wearily. Just to be cautious. He turned around to continue walking when he heard a rustle in the leaves. His head whipped around and he stared at the bushes at the side of the track.
"Come on Mike we haven't got all day!" Tré called. Mike glared at the bush for a second longer before turning away and jogging to catch up with his bandmates.
"Don't you guys just feel a little bit uneasy?" Billie Joe asked, trying to press them once more for an answer.
"Yeah, I do a bit," Mike replied, not mentioning the bush that he was sure had moved, for fear of looking like a scaredy cat. He glanced over his shoulder and Tré, catching this action let out a groan of frustration.
"Oh for God's sake you guys! Why are you so jumpy? What are the chances of it happening again?" Tré asked exasperatedly.
"Quite high actually... " A cold voice answered as a red headed woman stepped out onto the dirt track. The three men stood there, eyes wide for around thirty seconds before pulling themselves together, Billie Joe being the first to speak.
"Oh ha ha Jane." Billie said sarcastically. The woman raised an eyebrow. "Jane?" he asked quietly.
"Shouldn't you be like in New York or something?" Tré asked. He was just as confused as Billie Joe, but whichever one of the Aspen twins it was, they should be in New York, Sarah in prison and Jane at home.
"I shouldn't be anywhere. I go where I want," she replied defiantly.
"How did you know we were here?" Mike asked.
"I was driving around when I saw you heading up here. And, I followed," she
replied simply as though it were obvious what she had done. The tree men looked at each other, obviously confused. Tré frowned and it looked like his brain was hard at work.
"So hang on, which one are you?" Tré asked.
"I know... but I'll just double check," Billie Joe said as he began to walk forwards. When he reached her he looked into her eyes and recognised a glint which he had only seen in one of the twins' eyes. It wasn't an evil glint, it was mischievous, and Billie Joe knew exactly who this twin was. He leaned forward and kissed her.
"Oh yeah, it's Jane," Billie Joe said as he turned around grinning. Mike and Tré smiled in relief.
"You know you could have just checked to see if I had a scar on my stomach... " Jane said shyly.
"But this way's more fun... " Jane smiled before pulling him in for another kiss.
