The Green Day kidnapper, Sarah Aspen, 28, has been pronounced dead due to a broken neck. She was being held in New York State Penitentiary after being sentenced for seventeen years for multiple charges including kidnap, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

It has been reported that Aspen, dubbed by the press as the Green Day Grabber, killed herself after repeatedly saying to her cell mate Angelina Foster (convicted for armed robbery 2 years ago) that it is 'better to burn out than fade away' quoting the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain. "She seemed obsessed with getting famous, always said she liked it when things went out with a bang, instead of dragged on and getting forgotten. I never thought anything of it until now."

It has been reported that Aspen used the shoe laces from her shoes, which she so often stated were her sister's favourite pair (green chuck taylors) to make a noose which she attached to the ceiling grill. She stole a bucket from the cleaner's trolley and used that for extra height, putting the noose around her neck and pulling it tight before kicking the bucket out from under her feet.

The makeshift noose, whilst strong enough to break Aspen's neck, was not strong enough to keep her suspended from the ceiling grill. Prison guard Jennifer Holland found Aspen dead on the floor. "I was weary at first. There have been cases before, where inmates pretend to be hurt or injured, but attack guards when they check to see if they're ok. But, I checked and she was dead. Just like that."

Aspen was convicted in late May and sentenced to seventeen years in prison. Only six months of this sentence has been served, leaving behind the feeling that she took the coward's way out, with over sixteen years of this punishment not carried out.

Aspen will be buried in the grounds of New York State Penitentiary, as her sister, and other family decided they didn't want anything to do with the funeral. During the trial the Aspen twins' father commented, "we cannot believe that Sarah has done this, to her own sister who has supported her for years. It just goes to show jealousy can bring out the worst in us."

The Trial.

May 17th 2005: The trial begins. Judge Raymond Christopher began by listing the charges against one Sarah Aspen, standing proudly in the courtroom, dressed in a sharp Gucci suit with silver hand cuff accessories. When the charge for attempted murder was read out she grinned at her sister who, after being out of hospital for less than four weeks, shot and icy glare back at her sister.

May 18th 2005: Aspen asks Judge Christopher if pleading not guilty would make the trial longer and more expensive.

May 19th 2005: Aspen pleads not guilty.

May 23rd 2005: Green Day arrive at the trial, front man Billie Joe Armstrong telling the courtroom how Aspen smashes a heavy glass over his head when he defended Jane Aspen, saying that no one deserved a sister like Sarah.

May 25th 3005: Mike Dirnt, Green Day bassist stands in the dock, questioned about him being found in the basement of the Aspen house, pointing a loaded gun at Sarah Aspen.

May 26th: Tré Cool, Green Day drummer, tells the courtroom how he thinks it's ridiculous that fellow band member Dirnt is under any suspicion just because he was keeping his kidnapper and a possible murderer under control.

May 27th 2005: Mike Dirnt is cleared of all suspicion. Jane Aspen takes the stand, and tells Judge Christopher how her sister was a leech, ungrateful, lazy, and how she tried to kill her.

May 28th 2005: Sarah Aspen sentenced to seventeen years in jail, to be served in New York State Penitentiary.

Rumours.

There have been more than enough rumours flying around about the relationship between Billie Joe Armstrong and Jane Aspen, who, upon hearing of her sister's death, coldly remarked "S**t happens." Understandable when it could have been her that is dead.

Armstrong and Aspen were spotted in Oakland CA (near to Armstrong's home) walking along the beach one evening hand in hand. They were also spotted a few weeks later in Rudy's Can't Fail Café (owned by band mate Mike Dirnt) having a meal.

There has been plenty of speculation over the actual status of their relationship. Some have claimed seeing an engagement ring on Aspen's wedding finger, while others claim that they are just good friends.

Even more convincing is the fact that at every concert they performed after meeting Jane, the band covered the Maroon 5 song 'She Will Be Loved' from the album 'Songs about Jane'. "Billie felt that the song was written about her, there are so many references that could have been written about her and while Jay was in a coma he played the song over and over in the hope that it'd wake her up," Mike Dirnt said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone when asked about the strange choice of song.

Armstrong, who divorced his wife of eleven years at the end of March only had this to say, "You can't go through something like that without becoming incredibly close to someone like Jay, after all if it weren't for her I'm not entirely sure I'd be able to say this right now."

So why aren't fellow band members Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool seen taking a romantic walk on the beach with her?

"I thought I was going to die," Turn to page 7 for Tré's traumatic tale.
