Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, chapter 3
Jane awoke at 5am the next morning. Her alarm was beeping from the other side of the room and it was not going to stop. She crawled out of bed and switched it off. She put on her slippers and made her way downstairs. Once downstairs, Jane decided to go to the basement and play her guitar for a little while, completely forgetting that there were people down there. She turned the light up so she could see properly and walked down the stairs squinting as the bright light shone in her eyes. She walked over to her bean bag and spun around when she heard a noise. She had completely forgotten. She walked over to them and untied their gags. "You guys ok? I completely forgot you were down here!" She said quietly.
"Yeah, we're fine," Billie Joe said smiling.
"Did you manage to get any sleep?" she asked.
"Yeah, a few hours... " Mike replied.
"I didn't wake you up did I?"
"No, you didn't. We're glad to see you." Billie Joe said.
"Oh well that's good then."
"What happened to your face?" Billie Joe asked concernedly.
"Oh that?" Jane said running a finger down the gash on her cheek, "that... I got that last night. Before I came home."
"Who did it?"
"My boyfriend... well, soon to be ex boyfriend... just because I wouldn't go back to his place 'cause I needed to be up early today."
"Bastard... " Billie Joe whispered.
"Yeah... love sucks... it makes you blind... especially to bastards like that."
"Once you find real love though... with someone who loves you back just as much... then it's great... or so I've been told." Billie Joe said. He looked a little sad towards the end of the sentence.
"Nice pyjamas," Tré smirked. Jane smirked back and he laughed. "What? It's true! They are very nice... if you know what I mean... "
"What the hell Tré? It's trousers and a vest thingy! How can you get thrills over that?" Billie said.
"Yeah but have you seen how tight-" He was stopped in mid sentence when Jane tied the gag around his mouth.
"These do come in handy," she said gesturing to the gags. "Do you guys want some breakfast?"
"We would love some breakfast." Mike said. Tré nodded fervently and Billie Joe smiled.
"Well what do you want?"
"Food, anything." Billie Joe said, before adding as an afterthought, "except meat."
"Toast? Cereal? Guinness?"
"Toast is good," Mike said, "toast is very good."
"Ok, I'll be back in a little while, just talk amongst yourselves. Don't go away!" Jane said as she walked up the stairs. Billie Joe rolled his eyes.
"Oh yeah, like we'll just get up and leave... without dislocating our shoulders or something." Jane smiled and disappeared behind the door.
"You like her." Mike said.
"She's nice, what's not to like?" Billie Joe replied.
"No, you really like her. Not just in a twin sister of evil kidnapper way but you like her!"
"Shut up Mike... "
"You do! Billie and Jane sitting in a tree-"
"I said shut up! And by the way, you're turning into Tré - you stole his favourite song."
"I... shut up. I am not like Tré." Mike said grumpily. Tré was muttering but his gag blocked out his voice so they didn't know what he was saying.
"Breakfast is served," Jane said as she came down with a plateful of toast.
"You are a star." Billie Joe said eyeing the toast. He looked up at her and
grinned. She untied their hands and gave them a plate of toast each. They ate the toast slowly and Jane sat on the bean bag in the corner watching them. "What?" Billie Joe asked finally looking up at her.
"Nothing... it's just, well, it's not every day you go downstairs and find your favourite band down there.
"Favourite band?"
"Yeah, I guess you haven't seen my poster wall behind you." They turned around and looked at the wall behind them. It was covered ceiling to floor in posters of Jane's favourite bands, Green Day being one of them. Other bands included Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, My Chemical Romance and many others.
"That's pretty cool... " Mike said.
"Yeah, this is my teenage pace you know? Like I come down here and I can be a teenager again so I kinda made it look like a teenager's room."
"I like it. It's like a little never land in your own house... where you don't have to grow up." Billie Joe said.
"Yeah, I'm still gonna be coming down here when I'm eighty five. If I'm alive that long. And if I still live here which I doubt I will."
"Why not?"
"Well it's a nice place but I dunno... it's just somewhere to live you know?" They finished eating their breakfast and Jane took their plates back upstairs. She returned after washing them up and found the guys talking to each other.
"Have you come up with any ideas for our dramatic escape yet?" Tré asked. Jane plonked herself down on the bean bag and rested her chin on her hand while the guys waited for the answer.
"D'you want the long or short answer?" she asked.
"Short," Mike decided.
"No."
"Long?" Billie Joe asked hopefully.
"Well, you see, I haven't really had much time to think you know and 'cause I only knew last night and then I had to go to bed 'cause I was so tired... "
"Ok, we get the idea of what the long answer is now... " Tré said.
"Well you can't give up hope! It's Thursday right? So that means three days. You're gonna be here three days maximum."
"I thought it was Friday?"
"No, when I came down earlier it was about 12.30 so it's still Thursday I'm afraid."
"Damn... oh well."
"Well, I have to go and get ready for work now 'cause you know, there is a rule saying no pyjamas... I think... or is there?" The guys laughed as Jane tied their gags back on still muttering about wearing pyjamas for work. "'Cause you know, it's not like it's offensive to anyone... I'll ask today... " She walked upstairs and shut the door. After having a quick shower and getting dressed she sat on her bed thinking about how she could get the guys out without anyone getting hurt. She couldn't understand why Sarah would go this far. Who could actually do that? She sighed and grabbed her jacket before heading out to the car.
"Jay, you're covering the kidnapping. We'll get Amy to do the Usher story," Jane's boss said as soon as she stepped in the door.
"Kidnapping? What kidnapping?"
"The Green Day kidnapping! There's been a ransom phone call and they've all gone missing! Come on Jane, where have you been?"
"I've been at home. Asleep."
"Well write the article! I've left all the info on your desk." Jane walked over to her desk to see a few sheets of paper with some notes jotted down on them. She switched on her computer and started typing, wondering how the guys were doing.
***
"Why hello boys... " They looked up to the top of the stairs to see a red haired, green eyed woman smiling evilly. It had to be Sarah; there was no gash on her cheek. "Oh and just so you know I didn't put those damn posters up on the wall behind you. That was my sister... " she said bitterly. You could tell that she was jealous. And bitter. And angry. She was feeling every bad feeling towards her sister that it was possible to feel. Pure hate. "So basically I'm just going to tell you that I've made a ransom phone call. Course I won't tell you how much it's for. Personally I think I asked for way too much but you know, you guys are loved by a few people out there... can't see why but you know, people are retarded. Oh and if Jane comes down here and tries to let you go, warn her that I am very dangerous. And she will regret letting you go. Well I don't know how much you can regret when you're dead... but don't worry. I won't hurt you... much... " She turned around and walked out of the basement slamming the door shut behind her.
Billie Joe, Mike and Tré exchanged worried glances. They were all thinking the same thing: 'Fuck... '
"Yeah, we're fine," Billie Joe said smiling.
"Did you manage to get any sleep?" she asked.
"Yeah, a few hours... " Mike replied.
"I didn't wake you up did I?"
