Twist of Fate, chapter 3

Alexis was unpacking in her new room when Tabitha came in the door. "Hey need any help?"

"Sure," Alexis answered. She pulled more clothes out of her suitcase and started to put them in her closet.

"So what are your plans for tonight," Tabitha asked putting clothes away with Alexis.

"I don't know," Alexis answered. "I think I will just get unpacked. I do have to work tomorrow."

"Oh c'mon, your first night in Cali and you're doing nothing. You know what, I'll take you to this album release party I have to go to."

"A what?" Alexis said not really caring and continuing to unpack.

"C'mon, it'll be fun and I have no one to go with," Tabitha said sticking out her lip pleadingly.

"Fine," Alexis said. "But we can't stay very long. I still have to work."

"Of course," Tabitha said.

Alexis spent the remainder of the day unpacking and getting to know her street. She took a walk down her block and met some of her neighbors. Mrs. Phoebe lived across the street. A widow, but still light spirited and friendly. Mr. and Mrs. Haven lived to the right. They had two boys, London and Paris. Alexis guessed they had some fetish with Europe. Then there was Mr. Saton who lived to the left of them. He was an old bitter man who liked no one and felt no sympathy or shame. Alexis found this out by there first meeting when Mr. Saton complained that Alexis walked too slowly.

"You, girl, why do you walk so slow?" He shouted from his porch. "Don't you know this world is going to pass you by if you don't get moving?"

"I didn't know," Alexis answered hurrying along. This was the neighborhood she lived in. When Alexis walked back in her house from the long walk Tabitha was sitting in the living room waiting for her.

"Where did you go?" Tabitha asked.

"I just went for a walk."

"Well we need to go shopping," she said excitedly and hopped up and pulled Alexis back out of the door. They went to a nice store called This And That on the corner of their block. "I always go here," Tabitha said. "It's great!"

"Tabitha," a girl from the counter shrieked as they entered.

"Veronica," Tabitha said leaving Alexis's side and giving the girl a hug.

"And who is this beauty?" Veronica asked looking Alexis up and down.

"This is Alexis," Tabitha gestured to Alexis and brought her towards Veronica. "We need to find her something for the album release party tonight."

"Well that we can do," Veronica said grabbing Alexis and bringing her over to try on some clothes.

Alexis was tired when Tabitha and she walked out of This And That with a bag full of clothes. Alexis swore she tried on every piece of clothing in that store. She settled on a little black dress for the party tonight. It showed too much cleavage for her liking but Tabitha and Veronica swore it was perfect.

Alexis looked in the mirror at the image of herself. She had to admit she never looked like this before, and she liked it. She turned around glancing at herself from every angle.

"Alexis," Tabitha shouted to her from downstairs. "We have to go."

Alexis grabbed her purse and walked out the door. "I'm coming," she called.

"Finally," Tabitha snorted as Alexis ran downstairs. "The car has been here for a while."

"The car?" Alexis asked confused.

"The limo, Lex. You didn't think we would go any other way," Tabitha laughed at the look of astonishment on Alexis's face and grabbed her and headed out the door. They climbing into the spacious limo and they drove away.

"So what album release party is this?" Alexis asked finally realizing she never knew.

"Oh, it's some band," Tabitha answered. "Green plant, I don't know."

"Oh, ok," Alexis answered sitting back and enjoying the ride.

After about 15 minutes the car came to a stop. "I guess we're here," Tabitha said sliding over to the door. The door opened and she stepped out. Alexis followed. When Alexis was out she couldn't believe the commotion. Photographers were everywhere. They were snapping photos of anyone and everything. Alexis held up her hand to block the flashes and just followed Tabitha inside.

"That was crazy," Alexis said.

"Oh you know," Tabitha said. "It's everywhere."

Alexis stopped and looked around. This really was a glamorous party. It was a huge room filled with people. There was a bar to her left and a dance floor to her right. There were millions of tables scattered about, and towards the back a huge banner hung down. It said:
