Harry wouldn't have gotten the sword to destroy the horcruxes. omgno

They would have done if they'd broken into the Lestranges' safe anyway, though.
But didn't they find out about the one in the vault after they already had the real one anyway? And they only broke into the vault because they figured out a horcrux was in there because Bellatrix was frightened at the sword they had. They wouldn't have just gone breaking into vaults, not knowing what was in there.

they would have found out from Phineas Nigellus that the sword had been moved, though. I'm sure eventually they would have been led to the safe to get the horcrux anyway, and if they hadn't had found the sword when they were in there, they could've kept the horcrux and used the basilisk fang.

Why would Phineas have told them?

Phineas was more obedient to Snape than he was to Dumbledore, and he wouldn't have carried out a dead man's wishes.

Phineas didn't mean to tell them about Dumbledore trying to break a ring with it but he still did.

It just slipped out without him knowing his importance. They only asked him why Ginny etc. tried to steal the sword.

Omfg awesome thread. Cassie

I always think about stuff like that, I'm like always regretting stuff that went wrong in real life so yeah.

I always was really upset about Pettigrew being able to escape in book 3. I wanted Sirius back to normality and together with Harry and everything. I seriously couldn't get over that til the last book basically. lmfao

I won't go on, because the list is endless, but one I've really been pondering over the last few days is what would have been different if Harry had been a girl? Now before you laugh, yes, it's all very funny, and yes, we know the name Harriet exists and it's the girl's version of Harry, but seriously now. A few points I was thinking of -

Would Petunia have treated a girl more like a daughter than she treated Harry like a son? Because Harry was basically a second son, but Petunia already had a son to fuss over. If she had had an adopted daughter, would she have enjoyed a more mother/daughter relationship with her? I think very possibly.

Also, would a girl (no claims of sexism, please) have been able to deal with everything Harry dealt with? Girls are, as a rule, much more emotional than boys, and Harry was uber emotional in 5th year - would a female version have been moreso, and unable to deal with everything laid before her?

Would Ron have been friends with a girl straightaway? It sounds silly, but we all know how fantastically immature boys are at that age.

I'm sure there's loads more to discuss on that particular subject - but I won't bombard you with my opinions, because this is for any 'what if's.

So yes, there we are - discuss.

Omfg that's an awesome thinking.

I'd think Petunia would have despised him her though, because the reason she hated Harry, was because he was a wizard and the son of her sister, right?!

But yeah, maybe she would have ... hated him less or something.

I don't think she would ever have regarded her as wonderful as Dudley, but I definitely think she would have been different to her. For the better.

Also, I was thinking that girl Harry would have been better at occlumency because girls tend to be better at ...I dunno how to phrase this without making it sound like I think all girls are fake, but with blokes it tends to be a lot of the time that what you see is what you get, whereas girls are a bit harder to understand. Bah, I dunno, but girls are just better at the whole "oh your top's nice!" and then five minutes later "did you see what she's wearing" so they don't really tend to wear their heart on their sleeves, not like Harry does.

Well yeah, that's exactly what I mean.

Girls tend to be better at acting in real life situations whereas blokes are just couldn't give any less of a shit.

I personally think that if Harry had been born a girl, Petunia would've been more resentful as it would highlight the similarites beteween him/her and Lily even futher.

Meh, I don't know, I think she would have wanted to neglect her, but her want for a daughter-figure would have overwhelmed that a little. I mean, it never says in the books that she wants a daughter but you know, a lot of people do. Harry was an extra son if you will, but Petunia wouldn't have a daughter to fuss over more than a female Harry.
