Spam: The Truth

Which Came First; The Meat or the Computer Term?

The Meat[?]
Although the contents of a Spam can are debatable, this 1937 meat has a very simple name:
Spiced Ham = Spam
Shoulder Pork and Ham” = Spam

Both terms are correct. Hormel, the company that made Spam, originally said that the meaning was Shoulder Pork and Ham, but, the original name for Spam was Hormel Spiced Ham, both terms and correct and valid.

So, 1937, did the computer term come before this?

The Term:
Obviously, the meat was first. But did the term take it’s name from the canned ham?

Yes, but how? Well, in 1970 Monty Python did a sketch, where at a restaurant, spam is basically all the menu is made up of. Although the sketch was only 3.30 it was loved and treasured along with such greats as ‘the dead parrot’.

In this sketch, Spam is uttered over 130 times. Obviously the person who came up with the term was a fan of Monty Python. And to finish off the blog, here is the actual sketch:

In Summary: The Meat Came Before The Computer Term

Now, onto which came first the chicken or the egg!

I think this blog should be in the section, as it seems most approporiate, but maybe not serious enough. If you think it should be moved, I'll move it.
