Inspiration.

The other day, I had to write a report on a topic using something I'd learned from my childhood. I didn't know why I had to, or what I was going to use. The day after I was assigned this, I went into my basement and looked at some old things I used to play with or write when I was little. I still had no clue what I was going to write. This was a problem.

As I dug through the boxes of my old things, I came across a story I had written when I was 7 years old. It was about my experiences growing up and moving from place to place quite frequently. I smiled at my bad use of grammar and little pictures I’d drawn to match the page. I had found my topic.

I had written about how that little book inspired me to write my paper on inspiration. It’s something all of us can use anytime. It makes us happier and gives us motivation to do simple, or complicated things.

The day after I had turned it in. My mentor (I guess you would call it because this isn’t for a school class) asked me to bring the book in. I did the next day. He read it through and looked up at me and asked why this had inspired me. I can say that this wasn’t a question I was really prepared for. He saw my perplexed expression and told me to think about it.

I came in an hour later with my answer. The reason this had inspired me was because of how much I’d improved on my writing since I was 7. Everyone does, but when I was younger I hated writing stories and papers. Now I love it. I never used to be able to raise my hand in class to answer a question, or get up and read what I had written before because what I wrote a lot of times never made sense. This book was one of the few that did.

He smiled at my answer and finally scored my paper. I got an A on it. He had told me that he wasn’t grading people on their writing skills. He was grading them on why they had chosen to write about what they did. He had asked every pupil of his the same question he asked me.

Inspiration is something that comes naturally to us. It can be anything, a book, a song or an object of some sort. It can’t force yourself to be inspired, it doesn’t work like that. Things just come to you, you just have to be patient.

Thank you for your time.
