WTF mhairi LOL:
Anji:

But my dad, even though he was away in boarding school most of the time, he still got asthma from second hand smoke.

How do you know smoking caused asthma? Because i have very severe asthma and ive read all about it etc and cigarette smoking cant cause you to get athma but it can be a trigger for asthma attacks.

I dont know what i think about smokig at the moment. It makes me asthma worse, but alot of my frieinds smoke, my dad smokes and my step dad smokes. Getting smoking banned completely would be unethical because the government gets so much tax of cigarette sales & it ultimately comes to down to the individuals choice and ant-smokers shouldnt have any right to make smokers quit.
You don't just get asthma from nothing. You have some repritory problems of weak lung capacity or other problems. My dad was perfectly healthy and his health deteriorated. Now he has asthma.

i have asthma and i will admit that i came from a smoke free home and what caused my asthma was animals, (which we had to give to new homes in the end) so your right you just dont get asthma from nothing, but now my step dad smokes and he smokes 60 fags a day.

I don't smoke [don't intend to] but if people rly want to do it, i can't stop them, despite the damage they are causing themselves, my auntie used to smoke [despite having asthma] but after having rly bad asthma attacks the doctor told her to stop and she did and saved like 40 pound a week, my nan smokes, and every time i visit i smell of it, but if she quit now, i think it would do more damage to her than good [as she has been smoking for ages now]
But it is irritating that the girls toilets at school may as well be called the smokers room, and whenever i go in, and come out after i stink of smoke, and it irritates me that i get accused of it, when it wasn't me.
When it comes to bannign smoking in public places, i'm not to sure about what to say on this, i mean they can ban it [which i think they already have?], as it can be unpleasent for others, but in most places they have a smoking area and a non smoking area, which is ok too.

then it wasn't a direct cause, he must have had weak lungs to begin with

if he went to a boarding school being around smoke during the holidays wouldn't affect him
my mom lived with some one who smoked eight packs a day for nineteen years....she's absolutely fine, so someone with a perfectly good set of lungs wouldn't be affected by holidays with smoking

i hate smoke and smoking.
My mother smokes and I try to stop her.
She says, "its a habit."

there are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes that cause cancer, bronchitis, emphysema (sp?), premature birth and probably thousands more.

people around smoke inhale almost as many chemicals as the smoker does.
all but the addictive nicotine.

but you cant sue tobacco companies.
its their job to supply the world with cigarettes,
and the smoker that buys them is not forced.
they have to live with the consequences.
there are plenty of warnings around.

most of those chemicals aren't harmful and most of the harmful ones are only consumed by the smoker and most of the harmful ones that affect everyone else aren't strong enough airborne to cause any lasting damage even when experienced daily....just saying

They've did that here.

Although, I think that smoking should be allowed on aeroplanes. Why? They change the air less when it's non-smoking. Therefore, staler air, less oxygen.

Therefore, heightened emotions, therefore increased chance of air rage.

Less Oxygen in air or more oxygen and more carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide?
I know which one I'd choose.

Plus, aeroplanes are one of the most compact and intimate situations you'll ever be in. Its just pretty damn cuntish to light up in such a tiny space. Also, lighters could be used for terrorism purposes.

I meant like it is circulated and cleaned more often.

Don't blame me, blame Steven Fry.

I really hate smoking. Both my parents do it so I'm around it all the time. It really sucks, especially when 50,000 a year die from second-hand smoke. Sad

I did it for like, a little bit. Under the bad influence of a so called "friend." But I broke it off with her and the stupid cigs. And I'm so much better. ^_^

That happens here.. but the police actually hire people underage (and people who look underage, too), and get them to go into shops and try to buy ciggarettes. If they're successful, the police bust them xD

And as for banning smoking is public places, they have that here, but it varies from state to state.

In NSW, these are some of the laws: Shopping centres, malls and plazas, Restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, dining areas and other eating places, Schools colleges and universities, Professional, trade, commercial and other business premises, Community centres or halls and places of public worship, Theatres, cinemas, libraries and galleries, Trains, buses, trams, aeroplanes, taxis and hire cars, and ferries and other vessels, Common areas in hostels, Common areas in motels, Fitness centres, bowling alleys and other sporting and recreational facilities, Childcare facilities, Hospitals.

And I think parks, too.

why is it then that when ever i am near some one who smokes and like wise my son we will have a asthma attack?

it has been prooven that second hand smoke is harmful and can cause long term illnesses, especially in young children and old people who's inmune system isnt what it should be?

So I finially decided to look this up.

Health effects of second-hand smoke

The hazardous health effects of exposure to second-hand smoke are now well-documented and established in various independent research studies and numerous international reports. The body of scientific evidence is overwhelming: there is no doubt within the international scientific community that second-hand smoke causes heart disease, lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma and middle ear infections in children and various other respiratory illnesses. Second-hand smoke exposure is also causally associated with stroke, low birthweight, spontaneous abortion, negative effects on the development of cognition and behaviour, exacerbation of cystic fibrosis and cervical cancer.

Here.

Exposure to ETS decreases lung efficiency and impairs lung function in children of all ages. It increases both the frequency and severity of childhood asthma. Secondhand smoke can aggravate sinusitis, rhinitis, cystic fibrosis, and chronic respiratory problems such as cough and postnasal drip. It also increases the number of children's colds and sore throats. In children under two years of age, ETS exposure increases the likelihood of bronchitis and pneumonia. In fact, a 1992 study by the Environmental Protection Agency says ETS causes 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections each year in infants and children under 18 months of age. These illnesses result in as many as 15,000 hospitalizations. Children of parents who smoke half a pack a day or more are at nearly double the risk of hospitalization for a respiratory illness.

AND

ETS causes more than 3,000 non-smokers to die of lung cancer each year

Here.

There are a shitload of facts here.

I encourage all of you to see "Thank You For Smoking" if you haven't already. Even if you're apathatic about the whole smoking issue, it's hilarious and gives a neat perspective of debate and arguing one's point.

If you are concerned with smoking (which I assume you are, since you're reading this thread), it strikes a chillingly resonant chord.
