I would love to live in a world where people can wear whatever they want, and people wouldn't judge them or where people can say whatever they want without getting in trouble or discriminated for being "wrong".

People have opinions. People judge. People discriminate. People hate. Wherever we live, we have to put up with hatred and discrimination. So we better get used to it.

Even if there are some people who will risk anything they have to try and stop the madness of discrimination, stereotypes and hatred and all that, the fact that it happens everyday will still continue.

Have teenagers changed _that_ much in the past few era's?

60's = mods and rockers

70's = punks and hippies

80's = bikers

But now, we have seperated off into many groups, and many different styles, so it's harder for the Media to pick a certain set of people; so they say teenagers in general.

Not fair, isit? ;_;

[I know that this has nothing to do with the topic, but when I made a thread about it I was sent here ¬_¬]

There are several innacuracies in your assesment of British youth culture.
Dude... Hippes were the sixties Cheese
Bikers and Rockers are pretty much synonymous.
And you failed to mention the expolsion of the Goth subgenre in the 80's.

I wasn't planning on going into details...

Sorry I had to knock that up pretty quick.

But my point still remains valid.

.... it has everything to do with this topic, what do you think you're discussing? The entire point of what you posted is that teenagers are unfairly stereotyped and judged, is this thread not for discussing stereotyping and discrimination? It most definitely is. ~~

Well, I'd say that was also inaccurate.
The daily mail ran an article about the Emo subculture in mid august. Sky One is but one example of a TV channel which has covered the Chav culture in a documentary. Goth is still as prevalent as it was back when Bauhaus were still releasing albums. So the claim that the media cannot differentiate any more does not really hold Think

I prefer not to be catagorised (obviously) but if I am, I am.

Meh...

Although, abuse of subculture terms pisses me off.

I'm curious here.
Can I have some people's opinions on what they think Goth culture is all about?
I think its criminally misunderstood, personally.

It's misunderstood, of course.

Uhh...I think my friend is gothic, but not really sure.

Long brown hair, long black coat, black trowsers and shoes...listens to heavy ass metal.

*shrugs* Most likely wrong.

Yeah... I'd say thats what a lot of people think Goth is, and from his appearance he sounds it, but Metal music isn't really a part of Gothic Culture. Thanks for the input =]

i guess it depends on what 'type' your going for

mall goth - slipknot shirt and tripp pants.

but when i think of goth, the image that comes to mind is a lot of crused velvet and lace and stuff

Dno

i could be wrong.

I kind of think of it that way too. There's different type, including the generic stereotype of a goth which seems to be black band shirt, long black trench, black hair.
When I think of goth I think of a dark mindframe, and sometimes an incredibly dark and intricate wardrobe. But, that's just how my mind works.

Well, I think that now labels like 'goth' and 'punk' have sort of become judged on wardrobe and appearance. Isn't 'punk' the act of rebellion and doing what you want? So goth is just another mindset.

It has to be about the mindset, otherwise goths are all just folks who like metal and black cloth. True gothics seem to me to be the ones who have dark, often depressed mindsets (as above). It just strikes me as the mood you get into when someone just gives you a total mindfuck, but for long periods of time.

Doesn't seem to me like most "goths" actualy HAVE that outlook, though...

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but dosen't fashion really have nothing to do with your social groups. Just like being punk has nothing to do with dressing it, same with goth? I've just been watching a lot of SLC Punk! lately.

Fashion has a lot to do with social groups.. Well, a lot of the time, anyway. People all have a similar appearance which reflects their music tastes and they use their appearance as a form of showing their personality, I guess.

I wouldn't say depression was mandatory. Although a certain mindset is required, I would consider it to be different that gloom and doom.
Goths, controversially, actually listen to Gothic Rock (not Metal). But in an age of Hot Topic and Mall Goth culture, and the dark post-punk haze of eighties which gave birth to the original Gothic movement seeming ever further away, who can really blame the majority of people in general for being mislead?

I mean, I used to think all the same things, before I picked up a copy of "The Goth Bible" in a Whitby bookshop (it seemed intersting at the time. Whitby, for all the non-UK people out there, is the place where Stoker wrote Dracula and is also Gothic capital of the UK. XD). Since being enlightened by said book, I feel it somewhat my duty to educate people of this terribly misunderstood culture.
