I just read this thread about emo. But I wasn't able to post things in there. So now I'm asking it here.

What is emo?
Everyone who is listening to bands which are not on mtv? I'm confused.

Someone said to me that emo is music with lyrics about the dead and satan.
Actually I don't believe this.

Can someone tell me what emo is?

many people think its comes from the word emotional.
i [and many others] think is comes from a genre of music that faded in the 90's.
people misuse it a lot these days.

To me, "emo" is Pon and Zi. You know, those little emo blobs that say things like "I'll just pretend to hug you until you get here." They're cute. But back on topic, if emo was 'emotional', then isn't most music emo? Because other than dance songs and songs about being in da club wit da pimps, music comes from emotion.

And I'm not really sure what punk is, but I always thought it was just a group of people who think in a punchy, realist kind of way that most people don't "get". And they express that creatively with art and magazines and music.

But hey, I actually came to this thread to read. I'm the worst person to ask about labels.

I'm curious here.
Can I have some people's opinions on what they think Goth culture is all about?
I think its criminally misunderstood, personally.

well it's totally a bunch of kids wearing black and moaning about the world........or not.

"[Goth] is the ability to find the art where art seems to be lacking; to find the light in the darkness and embrace it for all its worth..." Jennifer Mason

The original Goths were an Eastern Germanic tribe who played an important role in the fall of the western Roman Empire. In some circles, the name "goth" later became pejorative: synonymous with "barbarian" and the uncultured due to the then-contemporary view of the fall of Rome and historically inaccurate depictions of the pagan Gothic tribes during and after the process of Christianization of Europe. During the Renaissance period in Europe, medieval architecture was retroactively labeled gothic architecture, and was considered unfashionable in contrast to the then-modern lines of classical architecture.

I did reeeeeeally like history class (although not so much middle ages my interest tend to be elizabethan onwards) so reeeeeally liking history class means I know where to look for a reeeeeally good explanations on gothic culture. XD.

Today gothic architecture seems important and beautiful however in perspective to architecture of the medievil era, we would see gothic arc in the same light we now see ridicolous buildings such as the new mall in Plymouth (I just had to put that in there somewhere it's freaking ugly)

lmfao

You should come down to Hyderabad. Malls everywhere. They're building like, 8 all within a half a mile of each other. They built this disgusting grey one and they kept advertising going "The city's newest wonder!"

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but dosen't fashion really have nothing to do with your social groups. Just like being punk has nothing to do with dressing it, same with goth? I've just been watching a lot of SLC Punk! lately.

Fashion has a lot to do with social groups.. Well, a lot of the time, anyway.
Nah, I disagree with that.

Well, I know that my 'prep' friends not only dress different from my 'alternative' friends they act different.

Sure everyone has a different personality but differnt groups attract different people.
but like if you have an emo group its going to attract emo people who have similar ideas on stuff - whatever.

im too tired to really think.

What makes it worse is that the arse part of the mall is the car park where cars leave. so if you want to be really clever and sarcastic you could point out the mall is shitting cars....I am obviously not one of those people who would do that XD.

but um yeah so back onto stereotypes....um yeah so basically

If i was to be labelled what would i be

- I listen to every type of music under the sun my favorite at the moment being dance.
- I shop mostly at NEW LOOK, riverisland, topshop
- I adore smurfs and weird hostpital programmes
- I married young, which can be seen as reckless
- I surf, rolerblade and read as a past time
- I know how to drive and pay bills.
- I own a car and have a morgage

Now what would you describe me as, If you find it difficult to put my in one box then there is a reason for this. Stereotypes work on the basic outer appearance and sometimes emotional needs of a person. They don't usually go deeper than the type of music you like and what clothes you wear, which is why they are not only misleading but in most cases can be a lie of what a person is.

Case in Point i know alot of people who can be described as goths, who in turn are very nice and also some who are not so nice. I have also met many people who can be described as chavs who are very nice and some not so nice.

We all judge
we all discriminate.
It's a matter of accepting it before it can be resolved.

Labels suck.

'Emo' is used way too much. The people who way overuse it don't even know what it is. They confuse 'emo' and 'punk', but they don't even know what they are. All they see is something different from them, and something they can discriminate or make fun of. Because they're assholes.

I think it's sad and fucked up how if someone doesn't dress a certain way or too meet a certain groups standards can't fit into that group.

I can't stand people who pretend they hate something or refuse to do something simply because it doesn't fit into other people's idea of their "label".

Get over it.

Yes, I love my rockstars, but I do have country music on my iPod.
I love tattoos, but I won't get the eccentrically bright ones all over my body.

I have a silly confession...I never understood what goes into what label. They all seem to blend together. Most of them involve dark clothing anyway. Only goth has something to do with love for macabre stuff. And emo people have cool pants and post pictures of gay-emos on google.

What's up with that anyway? If you type in emo-boy in the Google image search, you get like 234978293847 pictures of guys making out.
