How do you teach yourself guitar?

My mums like so against me listening to rock so she won't pay for me to have lessons.So I started to teach myself from my bros old guitar book but it donst explain it well,dosnt teach all the important stuff.So yeh if anyone has actually taught themself how to play,tell me more.

Umm, basically you might have to go on the net and search. I have lessons. Heh heh...

Anyway, maybe if you have enough money you might be able to save a p for a intro lesson, just to learn all the basics. Once you know the basics, learn techniques by reading through stuff, listening to more rock music (your mum would be rapt XD) and yadda yadda yadda.

If you know the basics then great. Find some guitar tabs, and play from there. I taught myself how to do powerchords by doing that. Do you know how to do slides etc. etc.?

Most of what I know on guitar I taught myself. It's not all that hard, but being that alot of tab sites are being closed down, you might have to buy smoe beginer books or something. I took lessosn for like 6 months and hated it, the only thing I remember how to play is Ode to Joy.

i get a lot of tabs off the internet, and i bought a cheep book when i first started, thats pretty much it.

If you need to ask it would probably be best for you to get lessons. But since you aren't able to pay...

It depends on what you want to play. You can learn songs you like by looking up tabs, for however long they're left. But they're usually wrong anyway. Or you can look up scales and chords and so on. So it depends on if you really want to know how to play guitar or if you just want to know some songs to show off. But ultimately you'll play better if you learn and practice scales and exercises and understand music theory.

Wow. You had a sucky ass music teacher. Mine taught me how to play songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" when I was starting out. And he taught me scales and crap. (: I've learned a lot and I continue to learn a lot. And I've been taking lessons since about April.

i've always taught myself just by hearing a song and wanting to learn how to play it. and then i started looking up scales and shit so i could learn to solo and make my own songs. just go to the ultimate guitar site and it should help you much.

Yeah. Ultimate Guitar is the coolest website ever. And it's not closed down yet that I know of. It was still up last time I checked. Yay for tabs. Even though most of them are wrong. =/

yeah, the guy was a faggot. I hated the way he was teaching me. ii saw him at the place where I took lessons and I should have asked him if he missed his greatest student ever

i didnt read my guitar book. i just sat down with my accoustic, flipped to the chords page and just started to play. i learned how to read it my self, it was kind of obious. i never had lessons once in my life time. after about a year, in grade 7, i joined a program called rock school, and the music teacher actually helps you play the songs and get the band together, and he taught me a bit about guitar, like different teqneques and stuff. im in grade 8 right now, and im in rock school, again. i wanted to cover something by greenday, but were covering a song by the unicorns next year im taking rock school, its alot more serious. you learn how to set up lights and equipment and do all your own crap if you want to be a serious musician.
