 | June 8th, 2008 at 07:56am bjtp:Peardrops:Oh ffs. Does anybody know anything about the historical context of Greek mythology? .. what like, that it inspired most fictional writings before the 16th century and why kind if thing?
BEOWULF FTW.
We have six texts, and for each we have to find out the historical context, the audience, the genre, the purpose, the social, economic and political issues surrounding it and the cultural practises and values of society at the time.
And the first text is from The Gift of Fire, about Prometheus disobeying Zeus and giving humans the gift of fire, and then being punished by being chained to a rock and having his liver pecked out by an eagle every day.
Idk. I ended up on wikipedia, I feel so dirty. |

Oh well, I imagine if you just spout some shit about religion at the time, fear of punishment in order to keep societies in line, the fact that they had no science, and them trying to explain where fire came from. Someone once said something (technology maybe?) that is so advanced to ones society is indistinguishable from magic. Like if we had gone back in time and shown caveman a microwave they would have worshipped us as Gods. It was just their way of explaining things at the time. |

 | June 8th, 2008 at 09:21am Prometheus is the symbol for human improvement and resistance to government.
He shows how you would get punished for relucting and opposing the government although you havent done anything wrong. Zeus presented the new power which in the end didnt turn out as promising as it was said to be and Prometheus felt cheated after being chained to the rock because he helped Zeus to gain power in the first place. However Prometheus knows his destiny so he never fears Zeus and knows that he will be free in the end. |

 | June 8th, 2008 at 09:22am THANK YOU.
I'd given up on The Gift of Fire since Jane Eyre is much more interesting.
I'll go add that to my research, ILYALL. |

 | June 9th, 2008 at 12:14pm Right my hypothesis is that linking humans and fire ultimately causes destruction.
Or something. |
