Now, I've been thinking about this for quite some time now. But what really annoyed me to the point of starting a discussion thread was Avril's new video. I'll admit that the song has grown on me, but I find the video inexcusable.

For a while, music videos have been highlighting (for lack of better words) sluttiness and rudeness. I suppose you really should think before imitating stuff you see on TV, but it's getting silly now. It's like a sumbliminal message a minute: "It's okay to curse loudly cuz you want to. It's okay to walk around barely dressed. It's okay to publicly oggle other people. It's okay to make tasteless remarks 80% of the time. It's okay to get drunk and lauch yourself into a brawl."

I suppose they've toned down the whole gang violence and drugs stuff, but now they're really into behavior that normally, one would not put up with and that one should not have to put up with. They show beautiful women wearing bikinis wandering around near general stores. You know, I don't mind if you like your body. But there are places when you kinda should cover up. And then there's the guys leering at these women.

It's always nice to be appreciated, yes. But when there's six or seven guys trying to see down your shirt...that's different. And while I haven't seen it in any videos yet, the same applied for girls. If there is a guy with a very nice body who happens to be wandering around shirtless for some reason, that does not mean it's okay to just stand there and stare.

And then there's the cursing. I curse. I do. But not all the time. No one does. But now some people try to insert as many random curses into their sentences as possible. Why? What purpose does this even acheive? The same goes for tasteless remarks. Just because some stranger has a nice ass, does not mean you should approach said stranger and tell him/her of his endowment. Because get this: it's rude.

Now, we come to Avril Lavigne's new video, Girlfriend. It's a catchy song, isn't it? Even though it's really annoying at first. Anyhoo, those of you who haven't seen the video, you can head on over to Youtube. But it's a mean, mean video. You see a tall skinny guy dressed in black hanging out with his girlfriend, a pretty redhead who's dressed very conservatively. And then you see another girl, dressed in black being rude to the redhead, flirting with the redhead's boyfriend, verbally abusing the redhead, and hitting the redhead with a golf ball. If I were the redhead, I would tear out Avril Lavigne's pretty long blonde hair and stuff it all up her nose. No, not really. But I would at least stand my ground. This has nothing to do with anything does it?

But yeah. People like this kind of behavior. They cheer it on. They support it. But if someone did that to them it's "BITCH!". Don't believe me? Read the comments under the video. Go to another video you can think of that's tasteless or features people being rude and tarty. The comments usually go "Yeah! This video rocks!"

Now tell me, whoever you are, what do you think of this?

yeah, this is called "sexism"
and as a feminist I say
she's a complete whore, I masturbate to that video, and I have no respect for her
now what's so feministic about that?
don't respect sluts
but respect women

it's that simple
and thank you for bringing the video up because there's this stiffy I have to get rid of and hardcore porn is just annoying

Heh. That's a good view of it, even it was an overshare. And anyway, here's the thing: some women are being respected for their sluttiness. But it really isn't respect as much as it is awe or fascination.

I considered putting it in a blog, but I thought it would be better suited here. But I'll blogify it anyway. The central topic is that music videos encourage behavior that normal people would not have to and could not have. Idiots see the music videos and think it's cool. They copy it and annoy everyone.

So I suppose this is going to be locked?

Well, no one is going to disagree is the thing. The only debate that will happen will be over if they have the right to put that stuff in theri vidoes or not, and that has to do with censorship... unless you have something else in mind?

Not cencorship exactly. But I mean, music videos are supposed to represent the song. I guess the real question is whether music videos like the examples I gave actually represent the songs.

Not many music videos and their songs are alike at all. You could have a video about a crappy day at work and then in the video they're at a donut shop or something laughing and making fun of people.

I never thought of her video like that. Now that I think about it, it's like Avril Lavigne is making fun of conservative people. Like it's bad to dress nice and wear colors instead of black like a lot of people these days do. I think the whole point of the video was to say he was dating a "prep" and she's a brainless baboon. Now that pisses me off because a lot of people will refer to the redhead as a "prep" which is ridiculous. Stereotypes make people seem so horrible, doesn't it? There isn't anything wrong with the redhead. She kinda loses her mind at the end, but who can blame her?

I absolutely hate the video and the song, and I think it's absolutely disgusting how music videos are promoting shit like "Dresslikewhoreandmenwilllikeyou" and "Getsuperdrunkandyou'llhaveareallygoodtime.", etc, etc.

But whatever. There's nothing really to be done, because anything that can be done is censorship, which I am super opposed to.

So I guess I can deal with Avril Lavigne's bullshit. Rolling Eyes

I think that music video represents that song perfectly if thats the topic of this thread. The song is about getting with someone, and thats exactly what happens in the video. Coolio So.. what's the problem?

Well.. that is what the song is about though, and I think she has the right to say those things and make videos like that.

Im in no way saying that's something I would personally do, but my personal opinion isn't really important to her vidoes. I don't think at least.

If people want to dress like that, then they can. I really like the pussycat dolls. I've only heard what's been released as a single, but I like what I hear. But I only don't like it when managers and record lables pressure artists to appear a certain way to sell records. You shouldn't have to objectify yourself to be successful. But if you do want to look like that to appeal to a certain market, then go for it. I mean, all you're doing is marketing yourself. The people who want to appeal to the punk market dress and act a certain way. So do the indie people.

I am actually pro censorship of music videos because many music videos support violence.

Example?

I know that anthony mundine has a new video where he sets fire to a picture of john howard and the union jack (flag not picture)
It's been all over the news here (australia)
But its anthony mundine.. adn thats exactly what he wants.
Its all about publicity.
"all publicity is good publicity"

Anyway, back to the Avril Lavinge song.
I personally haven't seen the video or heard the song, But she's doing what she wants to do getting it out there by making it controversial, shes making more money.
Its about money, and it's about publicity.publicity.

sorry to repeat myself but really..

I don't think this video is about publicity. A lot of people seem to like it. They keep saying things like "That redhead deserved it, she's stupid, etc."
