I am REALLY surprised there isn't a topic on this... and yes I've looked.
So
Technology. It benefits us all... or should I simply say lets us enjoy our lives more. Its lets us live longer, gives us entertainment...
But do we need it this much?
It's effecting the ecosystem, kills life, is completely over populating the planet [with humans], bacteria strains are getting deadlier, so many things.
I think we should only use technology for gaining knowledge and art.

I think technology is getting very much out of hand, and in all the wrong ways. We should be using technology to preserve the enviroment and such, but instead we're developing useless nonsense such as the iPhone, cars that go faster and burn more gasoline, and stupid items that tend to limit how hard or much a human being has to think/work.

I completely disagree. Technology has helped lower the population with the introduction of contraceptives to balance the birth and death rates. Historically speaking, as countries became more urbanized, population trends began to decrease because people no longer had the need to have a lot of children.
Overpopulation occurs in places with minimal technology, in places where agricultural and rural areas are more common than urbanized areas. In places where contraceptives are not available, the birth rate significantly out weighs the death rate. You can't blame all that on medical science for keeping people healthy.
I'm an avid defender of technology and medical science. The technology and knowledge is never the problem, it's how we use it.

Aren't you using a computer right now? The internet and your computer are just as frivolous as an iPhone, but I don't think that's a problem honestly. We have the ability to make our lives easier, we should. We can balance constructive technology with luxuries. Not to mention that the people who develop technology to save the environment are in totally different fields than someone who designs an iPhone. They both have their places.

How many people develop something that can be life threatening before their 50?
there are so many people just being kept alive, and so the demand for food and energy increases.
This is more of a moral issue, but really. Don't old people...die? Like it's not unexpected if they die. They get cancer, and you can keep them alive. my dad had been kept alive for over five years... one person isn't a big deal, but multiply that by thousands.
I probably sounded like some cold-hearted moral-less bitch there. So attack me if you'd like.
Don't you thin there's a limit to how dependent we make ourselves on technology?

This is something I battle myself with everyday. Haha. Part of me wants to go run away to some remote island and leave behind my computer, television, cell phone, everything. But then the other part of me really loves how convenient it is to check bus schedules on my Sidekick. And going online to chat with all you lovely people when I have free time.
It does seem a bit ridiculous that humans have been living on this earth for over 10,000 years without cell phones and everything else and they were just fine without it. And now, people won't even leave their house if their cell phone battery is dead. And we're all probably going to develop brain cancer from using the damn things so much.

Well I'm only alive thanks to modern medicine, so I can't complain. But there is a limit to what it can do. Brain-dead people on life support, premature babies that are never going to develop mentally and elderly people who are suffering a slow decline in nursing homes - all of these people are being kept alive by modern medicine. It can be so hard for people to let go of loved ones. Of course, you can weigh up the financial burden, and consider whether or not medical resources might be used to help people with more hope of recovery.
I don't think overpopulation on the whole is a problem. Any western european will know that the birth rates here are crashing. Greece has something like 1.1, as does Italy and Spain, Britain is 1.7 I think. All of these countries actually want immigrants to help sustain the economy through unskilled work.

Also, I'm pretty glad I have technology. I don't really give a sod that cavemen didn't need it; we're not living in the stone-age any more. It is pretty difficult to exist in a modern society without technology.
Besides, wouldn't it be hypocritical for me to say anything otherwise. Right now I'm typing at my computer and later I'm going to watch TV and then maybe read a book printed with a modern printing press with my electric light on.

what really bugs me is when people throw away their perfectly good cell phones/ipods cuz a new kind comes out that pretty much just creates more rubbish, I mean you chould at least donate it.

An area is not overpopulated until it has more people than it can handle. London has the resources, or can make what it needs available. And I didn't just say "rural", I said...

An area like the entire UK is not considered to be overpopulated because there are cities and industries to supplement the economy as well as agriculture, and the agriculture there is productive. Places in Africa and parts of Asia don't have that, thus they cannot get the resources they need to sustain their population.
I also said minimal technology and I don't think the UK has that problem.
