Too Many Guts, Not Enough Glory, chapter 1
1941, Billie Joe was listening to the radio in his living room waiting to hear the news of what was going on in Britain. Ready to hear about all the pain and suffering from Hitler's rain of terror. He hated Hitler as much as the next 18 year old with relatives in London. At least Adrienne decided to stay in America with him. He didn't know what he would do if he lost her. He listened to the radio and the news anchorman said "Blackout's all over Britain are causing havoc, Germany are not going to give up." Billie Joe sat back and rubbed his eyes. Adrienne should have been back from the bar by now. She was singing at the bar to earn some extra money. She walked through the door to find Billie Joe sitting on the sofa. He looked really unhappy.
"What's wrong sweetie?" Adrienne asked setting her coat down on the side and sitting next to Billie Joe.
"I feel so helpless."
"What do you mean?" Adrienne asked rubbing his back.
"I mean. I should be out there on the home front fighting for my country." Billie Joe said standing up and walking over to the window. Adrienne said "Baby I know you're worried about your aunt but she will be ok." She brushed her hand across his cheek. He pushed her away and sat on the sofa again waiting to hear more news. Adrienne felt a tear come to her eye she ran upstairs and started to cry. The mascara was bleeding down her face. She sat on the bed and wiped off the make up and waited for Billie Joe to come back up but he didn't. Adrienne climbed into bed and went to sleep.
Billie Joe was still listening to the radio and Billie Joe was half asleep. The next thing he remembered was Adrienne shaking him to wake up. Billie Joe looked over at the time and notice it read 10 o'clock. He got up from the chair and walked upstairs to get ready. He came back down to find Adrienne crying on the sofa. He walked over to her and hugged her tightly.
"What's wrong?" He said.
"You. I don't know what's wrong with you at the moment." Adrienne said through the tears. Billie Joe let go of her and sat back in the chair. She looked at her with red eyes and said "I love you but you don't tell me what's the matter."
"I love you too but I just feel like I'm not doing anything just sitting here waiting for the next Pearl Harbour to happen." Adrienne hugged him and kissed him passionately on the lips and left to go to work. Billie Joe sat down again and turned on the radio. He listened to it and the anchorman said "Now we have a speech from our president Franklin Roosevelt." And it was the presidents speech. "Today at 3.05 pm Germany declared war on the United States of America, so we need all young men to join us to fight for our country." Billie Joe sat back and waited for Adrienne to come back home to tell her that he was going to war. He got up and walked down the dusty street and found a group of men about his ages signing up. Billie Joe walked up to the sheet and signed his name on The Grin Reaper's death list. He walked back home happy about the fact he was fighting for his country. He thought he was fighting for Adrienne, he would die for her and he was going to. He walked in to find Adrienne sitting on the chair. He smiled at her. She walked over to him with tears steaming down her face, she looked really angry. "You didn't, tell me you didn't."
"Do what?" Billie Joe said. Adrienne slapped him round the face and asked him.
"You didn't, you didn't, you couldn't."
Billie Joe hung his head. "You did! How could you do this to me! How could you be such a selfish jerk?!" She screamed at him.
"I did it for you! I did it so you could live! I did it for our country!"
"To hell with the country Billie Joe! What about us! Don't you love me?!"
"Of course I do. I had to do this." Billie Joe said holding onto Adrienne's waist. He hugged her and she broke down and cried. She never felt so bad, she was going to miss him so much. She wasn't ready for him to die. She kissed him passionately again showing how much she loved him. He kissed her back and Billie Joe walked her over to the sofa still kissing her. He pushed her down gently on the sofa and moved on top of her still kissing her passionately. Adrienne was angry with Billie Joe but he was hitting all the right stops.
One thing led to another and Billie Joe found Adrienne naked on top of him with a blanket covering them both. Billie Joe looked up at Adrienne and she looked so peaceful but he had to go. His ship was shipping out in three hours. Billie Joe shook Adrienne and said "Honey... "
