The innocent can never last, chapter 2

Billie, Mike and Tre sat in the patient waiting room. They had been sitting there for hours it seemed but they weren't going to leave until they made sure the girl was alright. Near the three hour mark a middle aged nurse finally came over to talk to them.

"Are you the three waiting for the stab victim?", she asked still looking at her clipboard.

"Yeah, how's she doing?", Mike asked as he stood up.

"Well her cut is doing fine. She had to receive some stitches but they will be able to come out in two weeks", The nurse flipped to the next page and looked up at the three men her face becoming very serious. "Unfortunately, our suspicions were correct. The young lady was rapped and we believe we know who her assailant was."

The three stood there not knowing what to say. Mike was the first to speak up.

"H... Have you arrested him yet?", Mike stuttered.

"Well... You see the problem is he's dead. A jogger found the man's body on a park path this morning. There was a chunk of glass stuck in his neck and it matches the glass we found in the girl's stomach.", The nurse stopped for a moment and cleared her throat. "The police have been notified, but in the circumstances it will most likely be ruled as self defense."

"Has her family been notified", Billie asked.

"She had no id on her so we were hoping that you might somehow know her?", The nurse asked hopefully.

"Sorry, the first time we saw her was when she came onto the train last night", Tre said a note of sympathy in his voice. "When can she be realized from the hospital?"

"She can leave in a week and while she doing fine at the moment our biggest concern is when withdrawal kicks in", the nurse whispered leaning closer to the three.

"Withdrawal?" Mike asked a puzzled look on his face.

"There were multiple scars on her arm", the nurse said continuing to keep her voice low. "She is a heavy heroine user and it's only a matter of time before her body needs more."

Mike stood there, memories flooded into his mind. At that moment he felt a great amount of sympathy for that girl.
