Best Thing In Town, chapter 4

Mike walked into the Buffalo club, Big Shotz, with Audrey leading the way in after Mike paid both their covers. He started to feel a little weird because there were people staring at him. And her with him. He just nodded to people with a minimal smile until they reached the bar. Audrey ordered a strawberry daiquiri and Mike a vodka and tonic. The two of them sat down at the bar and watched the people on the dance floor as the DJ spun the tunes. Audrey grimaced.

"They usually play better music than this. I mean, Ashanti? The girl couldn't sing if her life depended on it."

"Yeah, I'm convinced she got her record deal by way of sexual favors," Mike added with a smirk.

"I don't doubt that." Audrey sipped her mixed drink and placed a finger on the edge of the glass. The bartender had dipped the rim in sugar. Audrey swiped some of it off and placed her finger to her lips; Mike watching her as she did so. When she caught his look, she blushed and smiled. "I love sugar. It's horrible on my teeth, sure, but I can't help it."

"Excuse me?" came a female's voice. Both Mike and Audrey turned to see three young women a little bit younger than Audrey holding a small piece of paper, a pen, and a camera. "Sorry, but are you Mike Dirnt from Green Day? 'Cause we just came from the show and it was awesome..."

Mike nodded. "Yeah...that'd be me."

The girls giggled. "Could we have an autograph?"

"And a picture?"

Mike nodded again. "Sure." He took the pen and paper from them and signed an autograph for each of them, then slid off his bar stool as the girls passed the camera to Audrey to take their picture. Mike winked at her as he leaned into the girls' threesome.

"Say 'Green Day,'" Audrey teased.

"Green Day!" the girls squealed. They all smiled and looked at the camera. Mike, however, looked past the camera and at Audrey, something of which would be captured on the film when the flash went off. "Thanks!" the girls added as they scurried away like giddy mice.

Mike sheepishly got back up on his stool and grabbed his drink back as the bartender waved at him. "Drinks on the house if I can get a Polaroid of you."

Audrey nudged him. "Do it. Free drinks."

Needless to say, the Polaroid was taken, but Mike pulled Audrey into the picture too. They both commented on how bad they both looked as it slowly developed and both tried to assure the other that they looked fine. They handed the picture over to the bartender who handed them refills of their drinks, which began to loosen them up. Both seemed to have been somewhat reserved beforehand.

"I'm not gonna be able to drive home," Audrey told him matter of factly. She downed the rest of her daiquiri and asked the bartender for a Sex On The Beach. He handed it to her and she took it happily. As she drank it, Mike noticed her speech slurring, as well as her opening up a little more. "I feel so bad because even though I don't have a life outside of work and playing mommy when I get home and I deserve a little me time...I feel guilty that I'm here at all, while my grandma is taking care of Katarina..."

"You shouldn't feel guilty about wanting some time away," Mike replied, leaning in to speak to her over the music. "You seem like a hard worker, someone's who's dedicated and has a big heart. That alone say you deserve it."

"Well, I wouldn't have to worry about getting out if I wasn't a single mom. Kat's father...he died over in Iraq three years ago." Mike seemed real surprised about that. "We weren't married or anything but it was like a lost a husband. I think I've gotten over him, been able to move on...I just feel bad because Kat'll never know him and he was a good guy."

"I'm sorry about that."

Audrey waved it off and shook her head. "It's okay. Shit happens, right? I mean, yeah, because of it I'm really antiwar, anti-Bush...antigovernment," she added with a laugh. "Then there's the talk of cutting social security which means screwing my grandma over..." She lifted her eyes up to Mike's sobering up considerably, but still rightly buzzed. "And that's me. Miss Party Pooper."

The music changed tempo from a rock tune to J.Lo's 'Get Right' and Mike set his empty glass down and took Audrey's from her hands.

"Well, I know something to take care of shitting on parties. When you're down and out, get up and get in..."

"Scary thing is that you made some sense just there," she smirked. She looked down at her hands when Mike took them in his and led her over to the dance floor.

"C'mon," Mike insisted when she became hesitant.

He placed his hands on her hips and walked behind her before spinning her around to face him. He lifted her arms up and rested them on his shoulders as he wrapping an arm around her waist and taking one of her hand back off his shoulder and held it in his, against his chest. Slowly, they found a rhythm as they danced together, their bodies pressed dangerously close due to the crowded dance floor. Audrey had been looking off to the side for the beginning of the dance and then looked up by chance to find Mike smiling down at her.

It was slow motion with her. Watching her walk away, turning to look at her...it all seemed to happen in slow motion. Even leaning in to kiss her. Their lips meant as if on accident. It was just a light peck at first, when Audrey pulled back in some surprise, but the pupils of her eyes dilated and she met him halfway again for another kiss that was much deeper than the first. He slipped his tongue just past her lips and then trailed down her chin and down her neck as she tilted her head back slightly, closing her eyes. They didn't even notice the camera flash going off as they began to make-out on the dance floor.

The had left Audrey's car in the parking lot and called for a cab, both getting hot and heavy in the back-seat during the entire drive. They got to Mike's hotel and made out in the elevator, and then stumbled toward his hotel suite door. As soon as he slid the card key through the slot, he kicked open the door, stuffed the card back in his pocket and lifted Audrey right up off her feet, wrapping her legs around his waste and carrying her inside, kicking the door shut with the heel of his foot. The whole time, they barely broke from their kiss.

While holding her up in his grasp, walked through the sitting area and right into the bedroom suite where he gently laid Audrey down on the bed, kneeling over her with a knee between her legs and the other on the side. He pressed his hands down on the mattress on either side of her chest and leaned down to her as if he was about to do a push-up. Instead he pressed is lips against hers before whispering huskily in her ear.

"We can stop here..."

Audrey shook her head and lifted her hands up to pull his shirt off and up over his head. He shook free from it and pressed his lips against the heated skin of her chest. It was like a dance with carefully executed steps as their clothes began to peel away, item by item.

"You're beautiful..." Mike spoke softly. Without another word, he looked her in the eye as she bit her lip and their bodies became one.
