Living Life A Bit Differently, chapter 2

Billie Joe entered the small fast-food shack. He waved to one of the cooks behind the counter and picked up the mop leaning against the far wall. He dunked it into a bucket of water, squeezed the excess water from the mop, and began to clean the floor. Billie's eyes shot from the floor, to the front door, waiting for Frank to come in for his shift.

A short girl with brown hair stepped up beside him.

"Hey Billie."
"Hi Jess."
"What's up?" She asked.
"Nothing, you?"
"Same. Waiting for Frank?"

Jess was really the only one Billie talked to, besides Frank that is.

"Yep."
"Okay, can you tell me when he gets here? That is, after you guys talk." Jess patted his shoulder and walked back behind the counter.

He went back to cleaning the non-existent stain on the tile floor. Billie looked up when he heard the familiar bing of the bell above the door. Frank walked in and immediately strolled over to him. He was a rather short man with reddish-blonde hair done up in a faux-hawk. A 'class clown' if he were still in school.

"Hi, Frank." Billie said happily.
"Hey, Bill. What's shakin'?"
"What does that mean?" He asked, confused.
"Nothing, nothing. Um...I was going to show you how to make a cheeseburger today, but wouldn't you rather learn a new word?" He asked, grinning.
"Yeah!" Billie answered.

Frank leaned in and whispered into Billie's ear. A smile spread across Billie's face and he giggled.
"I've heard that word before." He answered.

Billie glanced towards Jess behind the counter. She was frowning. What was there to be sad about?

"Okay, so you know how kids love them? So whenever little kids come in, ask them. Got it?" Frank responded.

Billie nodded as Frank jumped behind the counter next to Jess. They started talking and Billie went back to his cleaning of the floor.

Every once in a while small groups of people -mostly high school students- would file in, get their food and sit down at a nearby booth, sharing small laughs and conversation. Once they left, Billie would mop up the remains under the table, just like every other normal day.

An hour or two later, a small family of four -mother, father, a little boy and girl-entered and waited in line where they glanced towards the menu behind the counter nailed to the wall.

Billie looked towards Frank, who was grinning from ear to ear again. Frank nodded, silently telling him to do it. Billie obeyed and slowly walked over to the small children. He bent down to their level.

"Hi, do you watch porn?" Billie asked the small boy.

The parents, appalled by this stranger, gasped. The father grabbed Billie's shoulders and yanked him up to his height (although Billie was only slightly shorter).

"What the hell did you just say to my kid?" He growled.
"Nothing, I-I like porn too." Billie answered, confused and a bit frightened by this man's actions.

What was he doing wrong?

The man shoved Billie, who in-turn, fell to the floor with a loud thud. Jess, who was watching the whole scene suspiciously, gasped and spun towards Frank, who was laughing so hard tears were falling down his cheeks.

She backhanded him, "You fucking idiot!" She screamed, angrily.

Frank stood, taken aback by Jess' force as she jumped over the counter, past the people in line, and helped Billie up. Tears fell freely down his cheeks, as he was confused and scared.

"Look, I'm so sorry," Jess apologized to the man and woman, "He didn't know what he was saying, someone put him up to it." She glared at Frank, who was rubbing his sore cheek.

"Well he should think for himself for a change." The woman growled, looking at Billie with a look of disgust.

Billie squeaked and Jess hugged him tighter. She felt a wet spot and knew instantly that her friend had pissed himself. She ignored it the best she could and continued explaining.

"He can't at times. He's not all that intelligent. I'm really sorry, this won't happen again." She turned and walked Billie to the men's bathroom and helped him calm down in there, but not before hearing the man say "They shouldn't let retards into public places. Now John could be screwed up from that fucker..."

She growled, angry at Frank's ways of excitement and Billie's inability to hold his piss in.
