Leaving You Was Never Easy, chapter 6

2005

Everything is so different now. I still live in Trenton- in the same house. But I have never spoken to Tre since that last time that I saw him. I went to college, then I dropped out and now I work as manager of a bar near where I live. I have a little girl, Frankie, she's eleven. She is in love with Green Day, which is weird because she obsesses over the people that I used to practically live with.

The phone was ringing so I ran to pick it up, Frankie's picked it up. Oh well.
"Mom, phone for you," Frankie said, handing me the phone.
"Who is it?" I asked her.
"Didn't say- he said he was looking for Frankie but I figured it was you- I'm sure I've heard his voice before, though... "

"Hello?"
"Yeah, Frankie?" the voice said from the other line- I had heard this voice before as well- couldn't place it, though.
"Who is this? Nobody's called me Frankie in years." This was getting weird now. Who was it? It was bugging me.
"Frankie, it's Mike!" OH MY GOD! What the hell?!
"Mike?! How did you get my number?!"
"Hey, calm down! And another thing, move house, you still live in Trenton!"
"I know, I just can't be bothered moving, ok," I said, laughing.
"So how's it going?"
"Good, yeah, yourself?"
"Fine thanks, hey, who answered the phone? Reminds me of you."
"Eh... my daughter."
"You called your daughter Frankie? But that's your name!"
"Eh, oh well- we can share."
"Hah, yeah, so anyway, I was helping Tre move house and he had boxes in his attic, that's how I found your number- if Tre found it, then, woa- I'm glad he didn't."
"What d'you mean?"
"Oh nothing" he said- I was so not convinced, though. Frankie ran out from the living room shouting.
"Mom, Green Day are on MTV!"
"Mike, I better go, I'll see you around."
"Hey, wait, she likes Green Day?"
"Well, 'likes' is the wrong word."
"Hah, yeah, tell her I said hi, ok? And is she coming to the concert? She better be coming to the concert!"
"Yeah she's going to the concert, she can't wait. Ok, see you, bye." I put down the phone- all this happened to quick, it was hard to believe- I had just been called by my daughter's idol who I lived with for a year then never saw again until now.

"MOM! You're missing Tre! Come here!" she screamed- damn right, I'm missing Tre! Anyways...
"Hey, Mike says hi"
"Mike? Who's Mike?" she asked, still staring at the TV.
"Mike, on the phone- ok, don't freak out, but it was Mike, as in Mike- Green Day Mike, you see when I was younger I me-" She cut me off.
"Hang on there, Mike? Mike? MIKE?"
"Yeah, I said don't freak out! Anyways, I met them, they lived next to Marnie."
"Oh my gosh, why has nobody ever told me?!"
"It was all in the past, we don't even keep in touch anymore, but I sure do miss them."
"Why don't you go and see them?"
"Like I said, it was all in the past."

Why hadn't I gone to see them? Was I scared of facing my past? Or maybe I just couldn't find the right time. I thought that I'd see them again, but things change. I really do want to see them again. Well, in a way I will be seeing them again. At the concert!

"Frankie! Hurry up, we gotta go," I shouted from the hall. Frankie came downstairs wearing a black skirt, stripy red socks and a black Adeline Records shirt, which was mine, I might add. She looked so cute all dressed up for Green Day. I was really excited about it; we had awesome tickets for the very front so we could see the band properly. We got into the car and headed out towards the venue.

There were loads of cars all parked in the roads outside and the doors were just about to open so we ran. We got inside pretty quick and found a spot right at the very front. The support band was just starting and they were really good. Then the bunny came on and everyone chanted, "Hey ho, lets go" over and over again. It was awesome.

About ten minutes of the bunny had passed and it walked off. Everyone screamed for the guys and they walked on stage. Frankie was going crazy as Billie started playing the first chords of American Idiot. The crowd sang along and people crowd surfed along the mosh pit. Once the first song was finished the guys started warming up the crowd, getting them to chant along with them. I was smiling my face off when I looked at Mike and I must have caught his eye. He looked straight at me. I looked straight at him. My stomach churned as all my memories flew around in my head. I missed them so much...
